I currently have Sky movies and a couple of mixes for £37 a month. I want to upgrade to a sky plus box (as I cant work my video :) )and also add my broadband and phone on. (broadband currently £14.99 with AOL at 2 Mbs and an ancient router- not wireless) and phone with talk talk at about £16 a month inc rental)
Best offer I got today was the 8 MB broadband and a sky plus box for £159 installation and wireless router etc. I said I'd buy my own sky plus box but he said I cant do that as it needs an engineer to install it- I thought I had seen them on ebay so do you need a different subscription or something for the Sky plus?
Also how do I turn my computer into a wireless one- does this need some other gadget to be bought?
How exactly do I go about getting this on a deal? Is there a 'best' number or time to call?
Sorry for sounding so dippy- just a bit of a Luddite!

as far as im aware the current offer is sky+ box for £99 plus £30 install. if you get broadband (includes router etc) and sky talk install should be free. (this is all detailed on the sky website)

if you go for sky max broadband the sky+ box is £75.

if you decide to go for a sky+ box from say ebay , the installation of the software/box is straigh forward and there are many websites that will detail the procedure. what you might need is a quad LNB to be fitted to your sky dish since sky+ requires 2 feeds from the dish to your sky+ box.

if you can climb a ladder then that procedure is pretty much simple too with a lot of details on the net.

to be able to use sky+ there is a £10 charge per month (for freesat) and if you subscribe to their packages (which you do) there is no additional charge.

i would wait to see what november offers come from sky. and then try to get a better deal than the one youve been offered at the moment.

to turn your computer to wireless you just need a wifi dongle that fits into your usb port.

i couldnt tell you if sky give you this with the wireless router or not since im not a sky sat or broadband subscriber.
  • I'm no expert in these matters but I'll help as much as I can.

The question about needing an engineer - yes you do need one. You get a new sky dish which has more outlet points (4 I think) and they hook your sky plus box up to that.

People selling them on Ebay will be targetting people like me who might fancy a 2nd sky plus box and can hook it up ourselves to our Sky+ dish.

As to making your computer wireless, you can ask them to send you a wireless adapter for your pc (or you could buy one). You install this (usually into a USB hub) and set up the router (it can be very fiddly to do this so it'd be great if they could do it for you).

Once the wireless router and wireless adapter are running, your internet connection will be wireless, lol.

As to the best time to call them ... I'd advise the tried and trusty cancellations call. Perhaps suggest to them that Virgin Media have offered you a fantastic plan with their V+ box, telephone and broadband and you think you'll just go with them.

There's a few threads on here with peoples' success stories on the cancellations (or 'retainer') line which inspired me to call them last year. I got my sky+ box plus installation for £49 which was a great deal at the time. I did have to threaten to cancel though and be passed to the cancellations dept.

you could just threaten them with cancelling and get the money off, hey i'd rather have the £14 in my pocket than in theirs lol. Acutually you'd probably only save about £10 in the first month though with the cost of the phone call to do it....
  • OK
    Thanks to everyone for that.
Am going to have a proper look at the Sky and Virgin website and say I'll cancel. Will keep you posted

Since you are still within the minimum 12 month contract I doubt they will offer you any deals, since they don't need to try and keep you custom because you are tied in for another 5 months.

Offer to sign a new 12-month contract. If you're prepared to show some loyalty, you tend to get it back. Been using that tactic for years with no problem.
