  • I rang SKY a few months ago, as we had genuinely been offered a new package with Tiscali TV, and I wanted to know if they would do anything to retain my business. Without much effort from me, I was quite quickly offered a more up to date sky+ box (bigger hard drive and anytime tv software) for free with free installation too.

Only last week, I rang to cancel sports as I am on maternity leave, and the scottish lady was interrogating me about why, don't we watch it, and if we do why are we cancelling etc, and my response was quite simple... I am on maternity leave and cannot afford it. We were then offered a reduction from £40 to £25 a month for 3 months. So we took it quite happily, hubby is quite pleased too, even if they aren't showing any england games :o(
  • OK guys, this is my story.

I've been with sky for over 12 months (so out of contract), and have two packages (£18), medium broadband (£5) and unlimited calls (£5).

Phoned up customer services on 01506831006 and spoke to the customer services chap. I told him that I'm sorting out my finances and know i'm out of contract. I'm looking to cancel unless they can do something to keep my business. The customer services guy said he couldnt do anything and said he would put me through to cancellations.

Another chap answered at cancellations, after a 4 minutes wait (mus be lots of people cancelling!). Again I was upfront and honest with him. I'm sorting our my finances, what can they do for me.

We went through each item. On the broadband he said he could do nothing. The system only gave him two options, cancel or upgrade.

On the telephone, he said he could give me unlimited calls free for 12 months. I said yes. (that's a saving of £60). Whilst I was talking about the telephone, i remembered reading somewhere that sky can also take the line rental, so i just asked him if it would be cheaper if I paid sky line rental. He said it would be £10, (as opposed to £11 that BT charge) but he added that he would also give me that for free for 12 months. (another saving of £120). Oh and he threw in free caller id with that, which is free anyway and i'm paying £1 a month to BT for it (another saving of £12)

On the sky, he could do nothing with the actual subscription, but did say he would give me a free sky+ box including installation. (Which is a £99 saving if your new).

So all in all, an honest and frank call got me £192 saving and £99 pound item for free.

Wish you all the best and hope this helps.

PS If it came to cancelling I was actually prepared to cancel.
  • It works!! Im always reading these posts to try & save money, then end up doing none of it, but this time i thought it was worth a shot, so rang sky to cancel, was quite up front, told the nice scottish guy my gas & electric had increased by £75 a month, (true, will be doing something about that next) and also told him our DVD recorder had broken (lie, but we were after the free sky +, so thought we'd nudge him in the right direction) anyway long story short, no deals on sky + for us at the mo, he did look, but we got the 12 months free line rental, so that was fantastic. Mother in laws just offered to get us sky + for xmas, but still would have prefered it free off them. But just to say thanks & try it.
  • I phoned sky this afternoon after reading this and they offered me the £3 per month for 3 months but if was only for 1 mix and with 2 kids in the house we need 2 mixes & Sky Sports. The customer services advisor was very unhelpful and wouldn't discuss any other offers with me. So I gave up.

After calming down I have phoned again tonight and just asked outright what could be done and a very nice customer services advisor has offered me my Sky Sports for half price for three months. But then couldn't get his computer to process the discount!!!!!
  • YIPPEEEE:j

He's finally got the offer through. They wouldn't offer me anything with my unlimited calls though as I was already a subscriber. And they weren't biting when I told them that my box keeps freezing, no free box for me.
  • well done sharkbait!!!
  • hi

phoned sky earlier and asked for some info on sky hd,then got through to sales ,a guy came on and told me that hd would be £150 + £60 install and £10 a month extra for hd,i told him that this was a terrible offer and new customers were getting a better deal.told him i wasn't intrested.
then rang straight back to customer care and told the guy to put me through to the cancellation department roughly explaining why i wanted to cancel.
A nice scottish lady came on, again explained my reason for wanting to cancel,
ended up with hd installed for £129 (installed next monday), swapped my bt line over to sky with 12 months free, half price hd subscription for 6 months and as i already have multiroom half price multiroom for 6 months and i only subscribe to the 6 mixes
and also today i had a letter through the door offering movies half price for 3 months (offer ending 31st oct)which i will probably take out to take it up to xmas
    :j
    quite pleased overall
  • Hiya re my earlier post, got free sky+ and free installation, yippe, they promised it this week or next but due to a glitch could not book it in before 3rd October. Said I was very dissappointed so they knocked £30 off next months subscription as I won't haveit for 1 month.
How good is that! :j :j
  • i only have the 6 mixes and Sky + and did not want to pay extra for HD although they offered me a deal, but they did give me free line rental for a year so thats 120 quid in my back bin. V happy with that

  • I phoned them this morning. Didn't bother with the packages as we're happy enough with them. 1 year free line rental, 1 year free calls, reduced broadband from £10 a month to £15 a month. I reckon we've just saved around £25 to £30 a month. Well pleased with that. Thanks to everyone for the tips.
