Most of it turns to water so never bother with it meself.i just buy ordinary fresh mince (£1.58 for 800g in Morrisons).Yep it needs its fat draining but better than the frozen stuff.either that or i get fresh mince off the meat stall in the market, which is always very cheap0

Hi Mappygirl,
Yes, if the mince was frozen raw once you cook it it can be re-frozen. The rule is freeze once raw and once cooked.

Thanks Pink! I'm a bit dumb at cooking - but I'm learning!

Maybe I'm taking this a step too far, but I've compared four different qualities of mince: frozen, value, "normal" and lean mince from Sainsbury's. What I did was calculate the price / fat-free portion of mince, i.e. price/(total weight - fat weight). They are all non-organic, and I've taken advantage of any multi-buy offers. It worked out like this:
Frozen: £1.82 / kg (£1.05, 750g, 23.2%)
Value: £2.66 / kg (£0.80, 400g, 24.9%)
"Normal": £3.75 / kg (£1.49, 500g, 20.5%)
Lean: £3.78 / kg (£5.00, 1.5kg, 11.8%)
Clearly it makes more sense to choose frozen over value, than to choose normal over the leaner mince. You need to factor in the fact that it is not fresh of course, and that it is mix of pork and beef (which actually is a plus point for me because I can never get hold of minced pork)0 -
I personally wouldn't touch the value mince, but then I'm lucky in that I can afford to be fussy. If I had a hungry family to feed and was counting the pennies I might be grateful for value mince. Having said that, if it cooks to nothing then I guess it's false economy?Resolution:

so the frozen vegatarian mince is really expensive compared to meat mince ? Ive been a veggie since a teenager so never brought meat to cook except for bar b ques - and then I have a real shock at prices but may be buying all the wrong stuff
the veggie mince is on average £1.99 for 454 grams0 -
I'm quite happy paying £5.91 a kilo at the butchers, it's expensive but they mince if there on the premises so you can see what you're actually getting, plus it's free range and has been hung properly.
Mince produced on a huge scale for supermarkets you just know is full of gristle and sinew and whatever else end up in the mincer.
I bought some (fresh) Budgens mince once thinking I'd try the cheap option but I spat it out, it was a horrible mushy tasteless mess.0 -
I have bought frozen value mince and am now fortunate enough not to have to as I have less mouths to feed. I wish I had known about soya mince then thoughI'm going to feed our children non-organic food and with the money saved take them to the zoo - half man half biscuit 20080

My MIL always buys this and anything she makes with it is disgusting, has no taste and just doesn't taste meaty. She can afford better mince though, she's just one of those people that thinks the cheaper the better.
I buy value fresh mince from tesco and then freeze it, that's always pretty nice.:heart: Think happy & you'll be happy :heart:
I :heart2: my doggies
