I have never bulked my mince out much but I am now going to start after reading your post.

A couple of questions, what size pack of mince do you use, 400g or 800g?

When you say you divide into portions do you use the same amount as you get in those plastic chinese take away tubs?

    Ta!

I use 500g mince and add what I have in including red lentils, grated carrot, tin of sweetcorn, finely chopped celery and pumpkin, chopped onion, garlic, tinned tomatoes, courgette.

That makes 3 meals for 4 of us.The extra 2 meals I freeze in 1kg margarine tubs.

    Penny. x

That is a lot of meals to get out of it.

I usually use 1kg of mince for 4 portions. Oh dear oh dear. Must do better. Never thought to pad out with oats before (although I did make Nigella's mini meatloaves recently which had oats in and they were quite yum).

Can you taste the carrot in the spag bol? Have wanted to put some in for ages, but because I make such big batches of the stuff, if it's rank, it's a waste of quite a bit of money.

How many carrots should I put in for 1kg of mince?

I alway buy the frozen steak mince and it is fine it is not full of gristle at all and can be cooked from frozen.

I use it because it is free flowing and I only use if for spag bog. I pour a small amount in saucepan and cook it. Then add sauce.

A small bag last ages for me.

i usually use a big pack of steak mince, i made some the other day and only used half the meat out of the pack freezing the other half (we are sooo skint this month  :o ) and used extra lentils and it turned out just as good as when i use a full pack, might do it like that again.
i use a mixture of old ice cream tubs and washed out takeaway/old marg plastic tubs to freeze it in, depends whether i want meals for 4 or individual meals i normally do a mix.
also when you are making this for the first time it looks like there is not going to be enough liquid as the 4 tins of toms are at the bottom of the sc then theres just loads and loads of chopped up/grated veg on top in a veg mountain... dont worry just let it all cook down and give it a bit of a stir, it should be fine as the juice comes out of the veggies. obviousely if you need to throw an extra tin of toms in then do so.

i always buy frozen mince, mainly because when i got it fresh i always ended up freezing it anyway. With tesco fresh mince I always found it to go off a lot quicker than the use by date and was always throwing it away.

1 bag of frozen from T costs about £3.50 and i always bulk itout nomatter what i use it for. It always tastes great and never had any problems.

    i also buy frozen mince.

i get either the extra lean steak mince from morrison £1.69 or the healthy living ground steak mince from tesco £1.69. never ever any grizzle or horrid bit's. if i ever found 1 bit i wouldn't buy it again as the thought of that turns my tummy.
