Does anyone buy frozen mince...

...or do they prefer to buy it fresh and freeze it themselves?
Does it make a difference when cooking certain things?

I bought some frozen mince a bit ago as I wanted to make spag bol and it was on BOGOF so thought it was a good price but I probably paid too much even though it was BOGOF!

How much do you guys normally pay for your mince and where do you tend to get it from?

TIA. :D

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I saw the title of the thread when you first posted it, and saw it again this morning, and then looked again, and I'm sure (and I'm still pretty certain) that it says 'does anyone buy frozen mice'

    DUR!

I thought it said mice too!! Thought it was from someone who kept Tarantulas or exotic pets!! Has it just changed to mince though? Or are we both half asleep Amba_gambla?

Back on thread though. If I buy fresh or frozen mince I always look at the % fat on the label. Some of it is such high fat that when you cook it you have to drain a high percentage away, so the cost per KG of the final cooked product is a lot higher than you think. Also the lower fat ones are healthier.
  • Hi

I cant eat beef very much because of my digestive system, but I do buy frozen minced lamb from Asda (500g £1.31-does 3 of us 2 meals)It is cooked from frozen and tastes fine. We use in chilli, spag bol, shepards pie and sometimes bung in a savoury mince with gravy and veg-lovely with rice or jacket spud.

  • i buy frozen turkey or pork mince. I prefer to buy it frozen tbh.

Altho i wish i liked beef or lamb mince as its much cheaper than turkey usually but i could be eating the worlds most leanest beef ever and still find a bit of gristle which makes me retch :rotfl: :rotfl: :confused:

I buy mine from my local butcher. I know what goes into it, (he lets you watch him mince it) and it's only £5 for 5lb! They also do huge pork chops £7.50 for 5lb. So check out your local buthcher, the supermarkets aren't always best!

I buy frozen beef or lamb mince from lidl. Both are around £2 for 2lbs, and both are less than 10% fat i think. British/Irish meat too!

I agree entirely. I want to know exactly what part of the animal has been minced! If you don't know, then how do you work out if it's good value or not?

Minced hoof, anyone? Only £1 per ton and it's on BOGOF ;)

I use the local butcher too nowadays.

Unless it's horrendous weather, in which case Lidl's/morrisons depending on time as lidl's is far away.

Anyhoo, cut to the chase. I don't much like the frozen mince, it has no real texture to it, and seems to be made up of rather a lot of fatty water.
I ave a dodgy H, so sometimes I will sound dead common, on occasion dead stupid and rarely, pig ignorant. Sometimes I may be these things, but I will always blame it on my dodgy H.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a grumble weed today, no offence intended ... well it might be, but I'll be sorry.

I sometimes buy it when the steak mince is bogof in Sainsbury's.It still works out dearer than some of the fresh , but I find it so useful because my three eldest never tell me until the last minute if they are home for tea of if their girl/boyfriends are coming. :wall:
It could be four to tea or it could be ten!Frozen mince just tips out the bag in the quantity you want!
