Does anyone buy frozen mince...

We don't eat red meat so I have bought frozen turkey and chicken mince in the past. I don't like it. It seems to disintegrate when cooked.
I now buy chicken fillets from the butcher and mince my own in the food processor. I know I am using a better grade meat than I need but the breast mince melts in the mouth and is not chewy with gristle.

I wouldn't use frozen mince, but if you are going to I suggest that you look on the ingredients list on the packet. It is likely to include water as an ingredient.
You then need to decide whether you want to pay more money for pure mince or less money for mince plus water. Alternatively buy more expensive mince and water it down yourself with tapwater.
The same applies to cheap chickens, turkey, bacon ....0 -
Sorry, as this is old-style I should have mentioned that you can always water down your mince with vinegar, the king of all condiments.0

I agree with many of the comments on here I prefer to buy my mince lamb or beef from my local organic butcher. you know what you are getting then and they can supply you with exactly the right amount.
I have tried supermarket mince both fresh and frozen and of the two I would always go for the fresh and freeze it myself. I found that pre-frozen mince seems to disintegrate and not hold its shape (if mince has a shape!) by that I mean the little granules (oh goddnes this is hard to explain - I hope you get my gist)
But I would seriously consider ditching the supermarket meat if at all possible.[size=-2]Remember its nice to be nice and its good to share!

Only ever bought it frozen once - it cooked into mush and was horrid! I like my mince in lumps!!! Buy fresh now, just use less and pad it out with veggies, which are good for me too!
Also, I freeze fresh mince and cook it from froxen - just put it in the pan and turn it regularly, scraping off what's cooked to reveal more frozen as you go. Or defrost in microwave. DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

Thanks for all the replies, as ever they have been a great help.
There isn't an ingredients list on the packet I have in the freezer, I just checked.
As I have to rely on public transport, the local butchers don't seem that local and they are all halal so seem quite a bit more expensive than the supermarket.
I don't for one second think the supermarkets are best but for where I live my local one is very convienient as its walking distance away so I don't have to worry about things defrosting or getting warm before I get home.
I bought a packet of fresh turkey mince a while ago and that made 4 meals, had loadsa mince in it but also loads of veg in 2 portions as I like veg in mince but BF didn't seem so keen so I had 2 pans on the go which is very adventurous for me.Would have stretched much further if I had my way but I barely have the freezer space anyway!

I always buy Sainsburys fresh lamb mince on special offer - 2 X 500g packs for £4. It freezes well and retains it's shape when cooked! Usually some fat to be poured off, but not as much as cheap beef mince. Personally, I think it's tastier than beef mince.
Commercially frozen mince of any sort seems to disintegrate!"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -
I totally misread this  I honestly thought it said "who buys frozen mice" thinking you had a pet reptile, or something of that order... :rotfl:0

I do agree that bought frozen mince goes like slurry as I would call it. Main reason is I rinse my in boiling water to get the fat out. And lamb mince has what I would call bits of tube in it. It is not fat as it does not melt.
I bought some frozen turkey mince it held it is shape not too badly. I use it to make a spag bog. And tasted vile I could not eat it. LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!! Husband said it tasted ok. Ummmmmm which one of us does not have taste buds.

I believe with this product you usually get what you pay for, but why not buy some braising steak and put it through the processor at least then you know what you're getting!Make it happen (old signature)
