Does anyone buy frozen mince...

I looked at the 'nutritional information' label on a pack of Morissons value mince a while back and the fat content was 41% if memory serves me. This is why it cooks down to 'nothing'... once the fat is melted away you're only left with 59% meat. You only have to look at the colour of it in the pack compared to a better quality mince - the value stuff is really pale because of the amount of fat in it.0

Our butcher sells 10lb of mince in 1lb ready to freeze packs for £12. 1lb of mince will do 2 main meals for the 4 of us, so it's good value. I couldn't eat the value stuff and if my budget meant that was all I could afford I'd rather buy extra veg or something nutritious.0

so the frozen vegatarian mince is really expensive compared to meat mince ? Ive been a veggie since a teenager so never brought meat to cook except for bar b ques - and then I have a real shock at prices but may be buying all the wrong stuff
the veggie mince is on average £1.99 for 454 grams
Although something like Quorn mince is more expensive per kg than meat it goes a lot further when made up, as opposed to the dead cow stuff which reduces to a fraction of it's original bulk by the time the fat has melted out.
Also it's high protein and very low calorie, and doesn't involve pulverising dubious bits of remains from deceased dumb animals!0 -
Really dont fancy quorn, mould & egg white? just doesnt seem quite right.
I just buy ordinary fresh mince beef and cook it up with plenty of veg to make it go further. I think frozen mince is a bit of a false ecomony unless you were aiming to get a lot of calories from the fat. Perhaps 50/50 turket mince and beef mince would be better.
Pork mince is avilable at ASDA, Jannbannan.....another happy bug.........sorry,blogger embracing the simple life0 -
Hi every one
Here I am still trying to reduce my food bill. I am doing really well, I have managed to get my £750 per month down to £500 initially. Now I have done that quite easily I am now trying to get down to £350 - baby steps have deff been best for me.
Up until now I always have brought mince from Sainsburys in the container and I have never used frozen mince in a bag. I really want to keep having extra lean 100 % steak mince.
Can you get this in a bag from the freezer department and does it work out cheaper ?
I used two plastic containers of low fat steak mince today which cost £4.50 and added loads of mushrooms, peppers and onions and this made 1 large lasagne and 6 portions of bolognese. Can I do better than this ?
Thanks

Hi Paige,
I have never bought frozen mince but from reading the Old Style board I don't think it's usually 100% steak mince that is sold frozen.
I find with mince that you get what you pay for. At times when trying to cut back I have bought cheaper mince but ended up draining off the extra fat (leaving me with less meat) and would have been better buying the lean mince in the first place.

I only tried it the once it was very gristley and I haven't tried it again. I buy the good fresh stuff and freeze it.
I pad my mince out more than that most of the time. Added oatmeal for the first time last week. Def not as nice as all meat in terms of texture but with all the veg I added too it was a lot cheaper and a lot healthier.0 -
i make huge vats of bolognese in my 6.5 litre slow cooker normally only using 1 tray of mince to make it. i fry the mince off (get good quality as theres nothing worse than fatty gristle) then chuck mince, 4 chopped onions, 4 tins of chopped toms, 4 grated carrot, loads of mush/peppers courgette etc, 1 mug of red lentils and half mug of oats all in the slow cooker to do its thing along with a squirt of tom puree/garlic about 4 oxo cubes mixed herbs and a good slug of balsamic vinegar. let this simmer for 4/5/6 hours and then i portion out into meal sized tubs and freeze ready to either have as spag bol/lasagne or chilli. it saves messing around as you are just cooking once so its less washing up.
the lentils just disappear into the bol, you would never guess they were there and the oats soak up all the flavour of the bol and bulk it out even more. oats and lentils are both dirt cheap and add several extra portions of food for pence.
my oh stood and watched me make up a bolognese in the slow cooker for the first time the other day (was trying to be helpful  )and he watched me pour lentils into the slow cooker and said "whoaaaaaaaa watcha doing??...i`m no lentil muncher!!"
he didn`t realise i`d been feeding him lentils for years and he had never noticed before :rotfl:proper prior planning prevents !!!!!! poor performance!Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realise we cannot eat moneyquote from an american indian.0 -
yuk!! please don't buy frozen mince !! its gristly and full of fat!!
like someone said earlier, pad your mince out with grated carrot, lentils, breadcrumbs, mushrooms, handful of oats or anything you can think of. if you whizz the veg in a food processor, no-one will know its thereand only use about a handful of oats or it'll go like porridge!! :rotfl:

I have never bulked my mince out much but I am now going to start after reading your post.
A couple of questions, what size pack of mince do you use, 400g or 800g?
When you say you divide into portions do you use the same amount as you get in those plastic chinese take away tubs?
