Tesco Internet Saver card reader security

I have a Tesco internet savings account. having looked through these posts, Im at a bit of a loss. What the h**l is this Card and Card Reader stuff? I've logged in and just tried sending money to my First Direct CA with no problem. I also couldn't see anything about 'Card Readers' on the website. Although I didnt' want to set up a new payment destination, I tried initiating it ('Create new transfer....') and it took me ot the first page to enter details etc. OK.
I'm very confused. If I was going to need one of these to operate the account, shouldn't they be sending out Cards and Card readers immediately to all their customers??? And what is the card reader anyway? All I need is another lump of hardware on my desk?0 -

I've just tried again to add a payee in light of what you've said (bearing in mind my card reader is on it's way and I already have received the card and PIN).
I went to PAYMENTS then PAYEES. As I have no payees (other than my nominated account) this is the message that appeared:
If the payee you require is not included in this list, you can add a new payee.
so I clicked on ADD A NEW PAYEE and this is what appeared:
You need to enable your Card-Reader to use this function. Don’t worry, it will only take a couple of minutes.
If you don’t have your Card-Reader with you or it hasn’t arrived yet, call Telephone Service or visit your branch and we’ll do our best to help.
This is exactly the same as when I tried it a month ago so although then it prompted you to order it online.
If you went to CREATE A TRANSFER AUTHORITY this is different from adding a payee and does indeed take you to a page where you can input information. It's the payee section where you are prompted to order a card reader. If I was going to need one of these to operate the account, shouldn't they be sending out Cards and Card readers immediately to all their customers???
Precisely our point. We were allowed to open our accounts without knowing this card reader and card would be required to may payments and have consequently found that our money is trapped in this account until they decide to play ball and send the card readers out but only when you've found out you need to request one.0 -
I suggest people complain about not being told.
Did that and then I was transferred to technical department so a gentleman could explain that the new system wasn't working properly.
Wrote to them asking for a card reader as the two times I had ordered it they hadn't arrived. Letter ignored.
When "replacement" card arrived I phoned up and asked where the card reader was. CSA checked to see if any were in stock and put one in post that day. I asked if my "complaint" could go to a higher authority or "feedback" be left only to be told that as my issue had now been "resolved" there was nothing else to be done.
Left handright hand
comes to mind.

This set of sorry tales is appalling !!!! I can only be thankful that I already have my FD CA set up as a destination. The poster who couldn't his hands on his OWN MONEY to pay for house deposit.....what do Tesco think they are doing??? Its pretty outrageous. Almost makes me think that if this is how disorganised they are and how they treat people that I ought to get my money back out....but of course only to an already setup destination....0

They must have copied RBS's boilerplate for this, because I doubt Hackney Wick Tesco Metro is going to have a clue what to do with the situation.
If you're having trouble, I really would suggest giving them a ring as they may well be able to set up new payees by phone.0 -

There shouldn't be a problem now as Tesco have now posted the card reader to me, they sent it special delivery to arrive on Friday only the stupid carrier couldn't read the notice on the door which requested them to deliver next door (I explained to Tesco I couldnt be there as I would be at the dentist and that next door would sign for it on my behalf). So now it's the carrier that's the problem. They left a card for me to contact them to arrange delivery, which I did on the website at 3pm on Friday and put the delivery date as Monday (which came up as the default). Today I get a phone call from the carrier to say they can't come on Monday so don't wait in, we're coming on Tuesday instead. You couldn't make this up if you tried!!!!
Not sure if it's on this thread or the other one about Tesco but one person was told when they rang up "We'll do phone banking for you on this occasion but it is an internet account only"! Sure it is, that's why I chose it, just wish that it had been possible to operate it over the internet since I opened it in June.0 -
Several posts on here refer to 'adding a new payee' - do you mean you can pay to anywhere?
The Tesco site says "You can withdraw your money at any time. This will have to be transferred to a nominated account" which sounds as though it has to be just to an account such as your current account.

Have they changed it recently? Can you pay still to anywhere?0 -
You can pay to anywhere you wish.0

What an absolute PITA... I've just logged into tesco, trying to transfer some money from my saver to my current account (I've never paid money out of it since I opened it). Tried adding a new payee and got the message about a card reader so it won't even let me send money to another account?!!
I have read through this thread but don't even understand what the card reader. I have ordered one though... :question:0 -
according to Tescos t's & c's it states :
Withdrawals/ Money Out
15. Withdrawals from the Account may only be requested by using the Online Service.
16. Withdrawals may be made by direct payment to any other UK bank account
Nothing in their small print about needing a card reader / pin / Internet banking card to set up a new payee0
