  • Me too, very glad that I set up a payment to my Halifax current a/c before the requirement to use card reader security. Otherwise, my money would be stuck in the Tesco a/c for a month!!
  • Can you not set up payees by phone? On the site it says to ring Customer Services on the 'you'll need a card reader to set up payees' page.

RBS (Tesco's backend) are also implementing card readers on their current accounts. You can't set up payees without a card reader, which (when I rang in mid August) they told me weren't available yet. But I spoke to someone at telephone banking who set up the payee for me which I can now use via internet banking. (RBS said card readers would go out 'end of August'. Still no sign, nor anything telling me I might need one).

At RBS the problem is also that internet banking doesn't offer you any option to use a card reader if they don't think they've sent you one. So you can't use a reader from another bank. This seems to be the problem with Tesco too though Tesco also haven't sent out any cards!
  • My "replacement pin" came today. Not had a chance to use it with my Nationwide card reader yet.

I wasn't offered that option in August when I rang up to make two transactions. They just offered to make the transactions. I wish they had suggested it, it would have saved us a lot of hassle especially where the house deposit was concerned.

My PIN came today so as long as the carrier delivers on Monday then we will have everything to enable us to start using the account. I shall put an extra large notice on the door "Please ring doorbell and wait for us to come down as we live upstairs". Hopefully they'll see it and wont shoot off before we've had time to reach the door :rotfl:

That's interesting. Assuming RBS and Tesco are implementing this system in tandem, it explains the delay in sending out the card readers but why didn't Tesco admit to this delay when I first queried it. I think Tesco are offering a good product - pretty good rate, joint account, faster payments - just a shame it's been overshadowed by this problem. And when the bonus period ends after 12 months (1.5% IIRC) then we'll be looking for a new home if we have any savings left after doing up the new house :rotfl:
  • I got the pin this morning...and thanks goodness, it works with my old card reader. Now there is another problem....how on earth I can remember so many "pins"???
Suppose I need to write down somewhere....hmm....not exactly safe to me...also tried to use with the nationwide card reader...I think it works as well.....in fact, both card reader looks the same to me...except the logo.

Can you change the Tesco PIN to another number you want? I'm afraid I'm going to use the same PIN as my credit card, I know you shouldn't do it but I will only have the 2 cards.

According to condition B11 you can...

However, I haven't got my PIN yet so don't know if you can in practice, or how you would do it.
  • The card will most likely be a standard Chip and PIN card (it'd have to be[1] to work in other banks' card readers). That means you'd change the PIN in an ATM just like any other cashcard.

[1] Technically, it must support the CAP protocol

From the letter received today with the Pin number......

You will be able to change your pin number by simply inserting your internet banking card into the card reader device and then the following steps below.

Select the Menu Key on your card reader then select pin change. The message Enter Pin will appear, simply enter the Pin number below and press OK button. You will then be prompted to enter a NEW PIN 4 digit number, followed by REPEAT PIN. When this has been successful, the card reader will display PIN CHANGED.
  • Can I thank posters for alerting people to this. I did not know you needed a card and reader to take money out online. Tesco had not bothered to write to me. I have now requested.

In an emergency you can phone them to take money out.

I suggest people complain about not being told.
