1899 increasing charges to cable customers (merged)

  • Since last week, I have noticed that when I dial 1899, via my NTL account, I am told that all landline calls are 1/2p per minute, and I am sure that calls to mobiles have been raised.

My last months bill was over double what is has been in the past.

Time to look on here and see what else is around for landline users.

Strange this weekend I get through straight away with 1899 as I do any other day I use it.

I only ever had a problem once or twice in the almost two years of using 18866 and 1899.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)

The price was increased on Sat.

Coming up to Xmas so S^%$W the customers for everything that they can get... yes it is cheaper then NTL & BT but still why mess with the people who gave them their profits in the first place.... I am sure they are aware of the free advertisements for their companies from MSE....

  • i loved 1899, but have been annoyed with the latest price increase. i cannot even find it on their website, they still quote 0p a min, but im paying 1/2p a min. does anybody know if there are any other providers that can beat 1899 now they have increased their charges?
    thanks
    joe
  • The price increase is for cable users and not BT users and does show on the website under the prices for cable users whereas the price on the front page of 0p a minute is for BT users.

I am going to merge a couple of these threads shortly once I have split off some posts from the present thread regarding this increase.

No, for non-BT customers the cheapest is still Call1899 at 0.5p a min.

It is possible to use OneTel for free evening & weekend for those unfortunate enough to have a non-BT line. They are doing a special offer of 99p a month (new customers only) for unlimited evening & weekend calls.

It is, as far as I'm aware, still possible to use OneTel as a cable customer because they will give you a dialler box that just dials a freephone number (similar to what call1899 does). I'm not sure what the number is or if the Orchid dialler can be setup for OneTel via this freephone number.

See this thread for more info on OneTel's 99p a month offer.

Failing that you could move to BT for your line rental but you would have to look at the whole picture because generally cable companies will charge extra for TV packages if you don't take their line rental as well.
  • I am an NTL customer & I recently changed from 18866 (when they hiked their call rate from 0.5p/mn to 1p/min) to 1899 following Martin's advice. I've been enjoying 'free' calls for about 3 weeks (except for the 3p connection charge). Yesterday, out of the blue I was told by the disembodied voice at 1866 that my call would be 'half a p a minute', instead of 'this is a free phone call'
Looking at their website they are still claiming calls are free!!
Has anyone any news on any other 'free' providers for non-BT customers?

    I assume you mean 1899, not 1866.

Anyway, their website may 'claim' that for BT landline users but, for cable landline users, the 0.5p rate is clearly shown (centre of the page, HERE).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
