  • Its worth ringing the new provider you want to go with, sometimes they are willing to pay off BT to get you as a customer, I did it with TalkTalk and they sorted the cancellation charge with BT
  • when did this offer start! i'm mad! grrr, i got our BT line reconected in July and had to pay the full amount!!!!!! Typical!!

  • I found the BT offer about a month ago - i think i found a thread on MSE about it, i spent hours trawling through the internet trying to find a cheaper was to get connected to BT without having to pay the £124.99, apparently it is a 'coming back to BT' offer, i managed to blag it though, cos techinally i was coming back to BT from NTL but i had never had a BT line to start with. they were a bit of a nightmare though, an engineer was supposed to come out, but jsut went to the exchange and connected a line, but i had no socket in the house, then they sent BTconnect out to install the line, then sent me a bill for £160 which included the 124.99 connection fee - was all a bit of a nightmare but i got there in the end.
  • do you think maybe i could call them and try and get the difference back? does anyone know when it started then i can maybe plead my case??

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the info on the BT deal.

I moved into my flat a couple of weeks ago and the previous occupier only cancelled their Virgin contract about 3 weeks ago. I plugged a phone in and there is still a dialling tone and I wondered if this makes any difference to reconnection as the line is obviously working?

    Cheers!

I have just spoken to BT who said I wasnt eligible for this offer because I have not returned from cable (ours is a brand new line as its a new build property).

I don't see that anywhere in the t&cs though? !!

They also said the serviceview website wasn't an "official" BT webpage either.

I'm really annoyed as this is the 2nd time i've had to pay £124.99 in 6 months as we rented a house before this and the landlord wouldn't pay it for us.
  • I've just had the same - said the offer was only available to returning cable customers. I'm in a brand new property and annoyed because I don't see it in their T&Cs either!!

Others have had that nonsense quoted at them. As you say, it's not in the T&Cs. Ring again, speak to another 'agent' and you'll probably get it.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

i spoke with bt and post office regarding this

seems that bt will disconnect a line in the exchange if the property has been empty for 3 months

therefore if your moving into a property thats been empty for 3 months or over - chances are you will need to pay the reconnection fee of £125 (currently £30) or through post office £110

if property has been empty for less than 3 months you should be able to get the post office to reconnect you for something like £2

you can find out by ringing post office and signing up to one of their deals - they will then keep you online to speak to one of their engineers who will check the line and find out how much it will cost - if its £110 - you can cancel and get connected with BT for £30

My wife rang them earlier tosday to try and get a line set up for her daughter at her council house. After much passing the buck somebody eventually told her that this was only for returning cable customers. I have rang this evening and spoken to a very helpful person who also told me the same thing. Although when I pressed him on where in the T's and C's this was stated he agreed to connect my step-daughter at the offer price. Unfortunately he could not do this tonight as my step-daughter is not with me but he gave us a number that we can ring tomorrow evening to get this sorted.
