Aussie, give dgs a wraparound cuddle from me, poor little man they ought to have been more careful, glad your dsis test went well
  • Hi all

Forgive me posting so close together but I wanted to get the recipe on there before I concentrated on todays epistle!

First of all - Happy Birthday Whatatwit!
wmf - Yes, the OH was bored being ill he said, plus just as worried as me over the financial repucussions of not working for a 3rd night, so off he went!
Mioliere - I hope it isn't glandular fever, but if his glands are not back to normal in a couple of days I will try and drag him to the Drs.
OOh poppy, glad to hear the banana skins are working, it is my next trick. Well it will be as soon as I can get out into the garden. was hot and sunny yesterday but by the time we had had the sunday roast (thanks M & S deal) my OH needed a lie down so couldn't help me out there
Hi Jo1972 - nice to meet you, you will love it here. Sorry to hear about the washing machine. It might be worth asking on freecycle - I have seen people who are upgrading machines offer their older ones on
Redruby - thank you for the thankyous..:T That apple cake recipe really is lovely and I have been baking it for at least 25 yrs since my Aunty Sally shared it with me. All I did was add the spices as I love cinnamon, but otherwise its just as she gave it to me.
Welcome to jo, Scotrae, Consultant and Orkney Star, you will love it here
Squiggly - my pleasure hon, I know you will enjoy the cake!
Aussie - so sorry about the little ones accident and I would be just as mad too so feel free to keep ranting! There is no excuse for something like that.

Weather is grey again today but the OH feels much better so that is a good thing! Am hoping to do some baking today as we are out of bread. I make no yeast bread so it doesn't rise but it tastes good! I haven't been brave enough to try the whole yeasty thing..:rotfl: Think I will add cheese and some chilli today as I am picking my own chillis off my windowsill!

Left over chicken from the M&S chicken today for dinner. Then the cat gets the scraps as my OH flatly refuses to have boiling carcusses in his kitchen PLUS he says if he wants soup he will open a can!! I guess it saves the cat food as she gets at least two meals from all those little yukky bits you wouldn't usually eat so nothing really is wasted!

Hugs to everyone who needs one today and congratulations to anyone celebrating a birthday.

  • OMG three times in one sitting, I will have to have a lie down after this!!

As you might have guessed, I have always loved cooking, as did my mother, so I have a huge recipe file and book with things stuck in and written in etc.. :D And yet I am still picking up new ideas and recipes from here all the time!

    Anyway - watercress soup..

    2 bunches of watercress, washed
    1 large onion
1 tbls olive oil (or you can use sunflower)
1 1/2 pints vegetable stock (or you can use chicken stock if you have some to hand and aren't vegetarians)
salt and cracked black pepper to taste
    • When washing the cress, pick off the woody stems
    • Fry the onion in the olive oil until it becomes transparent.
    • Chop the watercress and stir in to the onion for about 1 minute
    • Add the stock and bring up to the boil.
    • Liquidise with a hand-held blender. (or you can crush thru a sieve but it takes longer!)
    • Add seasoning and serve hot.

    Afternoon all

Not the nicest of days here but we're going ahead with the BBQ. Mum's making scotch eggs and I've spent most the morning hulling strawberries ready to make jam when the sis and BIL arrive with the rest of the sugar.

It's Christmas shopping day on QVC and the special value is card making stuff for all you crafty people. Think it's on again at 4pm, but not certain on that.

Just made lunch for Mum and Nan - both wanted something differnet:rolleyes: :p Cheese on muffins, and a ham sandwich so not exactly taxing. I just picked at the leftovers from yesterday's roast chicken.

Back to work tomorrow, and I've got a really busy week lined up. Got a meeting about becoming a charity fundraiser and a rehearsal for a charity fashion show I've agreed to be in:D  Should be a laugh if nothing else! Also been asked to make a special appearance in an opera - no singing though!!! Not sure if I can do that owing to my holiday - less than two weeks now:T

oh Funky Fairy get online soon - have news for you;)

Well I have spent the day fighting with Ikea. Called back and got a much more pleasant man who said they would post it out but it would take at least a week. Resigned myself to this and dismantled what we had built of the bed so far and lugged it to the spare room. Then....... just happened to double check what time OH lands this evening to find it is 6.30, not 8.30. So he will have time after all to return the bit and exchange it for the right one. :o:o:o:o

I've spent so much time over this today and all for no reason other than I'm too thick to understand the 24 hour clock. :o:D :rotfl:

Haven't achieved much else today but I am beginning to see the landing floor again as the stuff makes its way back to its rightful rooms.

Diva, those recipes look great. I add a bit of potato to my celery soup to thicken it or to pad it out if the celery is bought. I have grown my own this year though so perhaps I'll be less mean.

Re the watercress, I made a sauce to go with salmon last week which was incredibly tasty and simple as we too have tonnes of the stuff growing.

Fry half an onion in butter, add watercress until wilted and stir in one tub of Philidelphia type cream cheese. Heat through then whizz and serve with baked salmon.

No sun here at all but I filled the washing line up, more in hope than expectation.
Hubbys having a bad day, should have been working today, but it's cancelled as BIL claims he's too depressed to get out of bed & go to work, I'm not very sympathetic, I'd be too depressed to work too if I'd drunk 15 cans of lager in one evening, grrrr.
Oh well, I've vacuumed downstairs, cleaned the loo, blitzed the kitchen & been to Tesco, which was very hard work with Mr Grumpy in tow!
I'm now going to put my feet up & read for an hour.
I hope everyone has a good day.
    Hugs Hester

Happy Birthday Whatatwit - now where did I put that pin :D

Aussie sorry to hear about your little DGS, it must be heartbreaking knowing he was calling for you when it happened. hope he gets better very soon

Well, it stayed dry so we had our boot fair postponed from yesterday and am glad to say it was successful. We managed to sell a lot of the larger items which means more room at home instead of having to find homes for them when we bring them back :T

Hubby is finishing painting our bedroom. I have just ironed the new curtains after popping down to Argos to get some new bits for the curtain rail and it looks lovely and fresh in there now.

Hope everyone is having a good day
