    thanks

as my name is mary jane smith (for example)

but i always just put mary smith, on any forms,

and i've just booked easyjet flights and used the name mary smith.

    but everyone calles me jane.

I am called David *****, my son is called David *****, I always book flights in the name David *****, its great, it means if I cant take the flight for whatever reason....my son goes....

....now if they ask for your age.....might cause a few problems

OP: "However, I used a members second name on the booking form instead of their first name which is on their passport."

Surely the passport shows both names anyway....or was it a nickname?
    I'm now a retired teacher... hooray ...:j

right so if someones name on there passport is

    for eg

    Mary Jane Smith

And you booked the flight in

    1 - Mary Smith

    2 - Jane Smith

which one would be wrong, i was lead to believe that number 1 would be ok, the 2nd would be wrong.

My understanding is that number 1 is correct, and number 2 is likely to lead to problems.

You would hope that common sense would prevail if you got to the airport and explained the problem, but they would not have to accept it, as the ticket could have been originally booked for your sister, Jane Mary Smith! ;)
    Gone ... or have I?

I`m quite willing to bet that if you booked your flight, taking hand luggage only, printed your boarding passes,no one would even notice the wrong chrstian name as you went through security.

You are correct they wouldn't, passports are not usually checked at " security " however they are checked at the gate, so you probably still wouldn't get on the flight if details didn't match.

I've flown easyjet for years without any problems (having said that I haven't spelt my name wrong or had to change a flight!), but what I find amazing is the number of people on here who like to come on and bash the OP at every available opportunity. Surely one definition of a rip off is being charged a highly disproportionate amount for a service rendered (eg changing a name). I can half understand the £20 charge but what is the justification for charging the increase in flight cost if the actual flight itself is not being altered? Many people here seem to be of the opinion that because it is in the Ts and Cs that its acceptable and doesn't constitute a rip off...what if the Ts and Cs said that the flight price would automatically be doubled if you didn't type your name with a capital letter when booking!!? Far-fetched I know but how different is that from charging ludicrous amounts for changing a couple of letters on a computer screen?

Right i'll put it in as best way that i think they charge this.

I've paid £23 for my flgiht to benidorm, it is now over £100 i paid for this on the day that they came out.

Now i could be working as a travel agent advertising over the internet, and i could have purchased 8 of those seats for £23 on the day that they came out.

    Bought in different names.

I could now be advertising them on sale for £95, which is £5 cheaper than easy jet, and people love a bargain, so would book with my travel agents before easyjet.

All i would have to do is get there name, ring easyjet and change the name on the booking, it would cost me £20 to do this, so the flight seat would cost me £43

But i've just sold the flight for £95 hey presto a profit of £52 to me.

So as a travel agent i make £52 the op saves what he thinks is £5 on his easyjet flight, by booking with me.

If a week before i've still got the flights left and i've not sold them, then i could do a massive sale and sell the seats say for £50 each, still a lot cheaper than easyjet will be now.

So i would only make a profit of £7 but it's still a profit.

That for me is the best way that i can describe, why easyjet have that you have to pay for a name change and the difference in price.

Earlier this year I flew with Ryanair and printed my boarding cards.
For some unknown reason it had my passport dated Jan 2008 ,which mean`t it had expired and my nationality as Irish when I am British.
I passed through security and at the gate without any problems.

There are other threads on these boards relating to the same experience as mine.
So I would still say you`d get through and board without a hitch.

You've missed my point. I fully understand charging the difference in price when you are replacing one passenger with another, but if it is a simple error which requires altering through their booking system (which does not involve a change of person or date etc) I don't see any justification whatsoever for charging this. People make mistakes...it happens...but I'm getting sick of seeing people coming on here saying 'you're an idiot, you deserve everything you get' when it comes to charges like this for an alteration of name.I personally do think the OP is being ripped off in these particular circumstances.

I would say that you may get through, but if you are stopped, then you are stuffed.

I certainly wouldn't advise it, it aint worth the risk.;)
