I'd reccomend against the aldi whole salami, I tried a bit the other day and the whole thing just tasted like shoe. Or how I'd imagine shoe to taste.
  • Bit stupid me. I bought the Dulano Black Forest ham and can't tell if it's cooked or uncooked. My other half made sandwiches with it this morning and rang me up saying it's very nice, but very fibrous, so he thinks it's uncooked! It's very dark meat and you can't relly tell and it's say's nowt on the packaging.

    Raw Ham
Uncooked, dry-cured hams that are processed with the intention of the meat to be eaten raw. The salt used in the curing process draws out the moisture in the ham as it is hung to age. The hams go through a natural air curing process where they are exposed to cool, dry air. The air curing evaporates the moisture as it is drawn out of the meat, resulting in preservation of the ham through dehydration. During the curing process the ham may go through several pressings. These raw hams are generally slice thin and eaten raw. The meat should be allowed to sit at room temperature for 10 to 15 minutes, before eating, to allow it to develop its full flavour. Shown below are some of the most commonly known varieties of raw ham.

    Black Forest Ham
A moist German ham that is air-dried, salt cured and smoked over pine and/or fir to give it an intense flavour. To be a true Black Forest ham it must be produced in the Black Forest of Germany. It was traditionally coated with beef blood, which gave it a black exterior surface. Now, more commonly, the blackened exterior is the result of the spices applied and the smoking process. Black Forest ham is used in pasta dishes to add an intense flavour or sliced thin and served with cheeses and breads.

If you look at the corned beef in Lidl (black label with red writing) - put it back and walk past. ;)

Opened a tin last night (usually eat expensive named brand) - started chopping it up to add to hash but honestly I don't want to eat visible tubes and unidentified rubbery bits!!! Just reminded me of Gillian McWhatsit explaining what went into value sausages and hotdogs!! It went in the bin.

Much prefer it all mashed up and unidentifiable but have been put off all corned beef for the foreseeable future!!!

  • Hey everyone, interesting thread!

    Lidl, Buy-
    Mens shaving foam
Gibellini razors (cheap and quite good)
Fruit and Veg (very cheap, good value)
Fizzy German Spring water (in green bottles, great after Gym)
    Lamb grills
Cutlers Chilli con Carne (DO NOT MICROWAVE, it will taste rotten! If you want to taste a good chilli, make sure you cook this on low heat for ten mins)
German beer selection (VFM and good)
Buns (at around 25p for a pack, good quality and fresh)
The plant selection (got a great selection of trees and bushes for garden)
The W5 cleaning range (big bottle of thick washing up liquid at 40 odd pence and actually smells and works better than Fairy!)Also recommend the W5 bathroom and kitchen cleaners)
Strange Red grape juice (nice and refreshing)
    Toilet rolls
Good value night light, made in Slovakia, with various disney characters.Comes equipped with low-energy light bulb and kids love it, as it is bright enough to light a room but dark enough as to not disturb sleep.I got it at £2, however Lidl have re-introduced it at around £5 a lamp.
Brilliant value Free-to-Air satellite dishes and recievers (80cm dish recieves Turk,Greek, Italian, French tv.In fact you can get thousands of channels)
Orange juice (great tasting and great value, esp kids cartons in pks of ten)

    Avoid-
Lidl pizzas (absolutely tasteless, doughy. If you do buy, buy the 2x American pepperoni but be warned...they are tasteless!)
Chicken Wings (totally bone, no meat whatsoever)
Dodgy cheap nappies (you might as well but cling film on your babies bum)
Moordale beefburgers (not too bad but swimming in fat and grease)
    Baked beans (Shrapnel)
Chewing gum-Energy Guarana (instant hit of flavour followed by...yuck!)
Cheese Triangles (although they taste nice and are good value, they are also full of E numbers which can send kids loopy!)
