    Most definitely.

Lidl are a spin-off from Aldi, as a result of a breakaway group in the seventies.

    **snip and splat**

If you care to research a little more, you will find out that part of the ALDI management board were responsible for the creation of the LIDL we know today.

As Lidl was founded in the 1930s and Aldi in the 1940s, that would be a good trick ;)

OK - I know when to quit (why no brick wall icon here?)
 Those with the capacity to comprehend my comment will have done so.

  • Can anyone tell me how to find out when Lidl do the half price fruit & veg deal? I've tried going on their site but it only tells you about the latest deals (such as clothing and electrical goods). Thanks

For those that really want to know more about Aldi this book is very interesting. I read an earlier edition in German about 5 years ago.

Aldi was set up by 2 brothers (Karl and Theo Albrecht) in 1948. The name Aldi is a contraction of Albrecht Discount.

To save you spending £10 on the book (not very OS) the basic premise of Aldi is very different to most companies. Most businesses want to make as much profit as possible. Aldi's philosophy is to sell the best quality goods as cheaply as possible which should mean high levels of sales, customer satisfaction and repeat business. The formula has worked beacause they are Germany's 2 richest men.

Lidl is part of the Schwarz group which owns the Kaufland chain and wholesale cash & carry stores in addition to Lidl.

Lidl was set up in the 1970's copying much of Aldi's blueprint of how to run a low cost chain.

Lidl has departed from the Aldi formula by having a wider range of goods (Aldi stores typically have 600-800 products, whereas Lidl stores will have over 1000).

There's a lot more information freely available on the 'net.

Don't usually eat muselli, but have been converted to the Lidl mueslis, the 50% & 40 % fruit ones are absolutley delicious. Far superior to any other I have tried, and they do have loads of fruit as it says on the bag.
  • My favourite buys from Lidl are:
Mozzarella cheese (they also do a light version which tastes the same) -49p
    Oven chips - 59p
    Frozen roast potatoes - 74p
Rogan Josh sauce - around 59p
Family pack of crisps - 99p - you get 15 packs and they are cheese wheels, salt and vinegar chip sticks, onion rings, and bacon things (a bit like frazzles)
I also think Lidl is brilliant for fruit and veg (although the prices seem to vary quite a bit), any cold deli-type meats, and dried herbs. Their Parma ham is only £1.99 which is great value.

Yep, could not agree more, although did notice ASDA have parma ham for £1.00 a pack the other day too.

OK, I know a little off topic, but a bargain is a bargain.

Thank you for this well-informed post. Everything is correct. Although the first ALDI store with the hard discount concept that ALDI became famous for was opened in 1960, in Dortmund, Germany. Home, sweet home.
  • Further to my last post, I would also recommend Maxi Trat liquid washing detergent from Lidl. It's like a liquid washing powder, it costs around £1.99 for 20 washes. This is much cheaper than my usual Daz which is £1.89 for 10 washes. The only problem with it is, that it cannot be used on wool, so that can be a bit of an issue with winter coming up.
