A bit late to reply but the bread mixes are all excellent value. The white mix gives a lovely crisp crust and the chiabatta is top of the range. Invest in a bread machine but check out the "big three" as one of them was advertising one at a good price. Sorry can't be more specific. Poss some-one else can.0

I was always told that the 2 brothers fell out some time ago and thats when Lidl started up in competetion opening up their stores very near the Aldi stores.Certainly the case near me Aldi's is right opposite Lidl's.I think Aldi have recently gone off on another track trying to differentiate themselves from Lidl by going alittle more up-market.0

each region has different deals on at different times, so when my local store in Basingstoke has half price veg, a store in berkshire or another county won't.
unless you know someone who works in your local store you won't know before it happens.0 -

The two brothers fell out over whether to sell Cigarettes or not. They ended up splitting the business into two. Aldi North and Aldi South.
Lidl was set up as competition by someone else. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -
A new Aldi store has opened near work and am fairly impressed. Agree that Lidl stock more variety though.
However from experience on holiday the other week (did an Aldi shop) and my regular Lidl shop here's my comments:-
Aldi
Lean beef mince - very nice - not gristly at all
Frozen cooked chicken pieces - strong chicken taste - great for pasta bakes and quick meals
Mushrooms - good but went brown very quickly (but may have been holiday accom fridge).
Alphabet spaghetti tins - the sauce is thicker and looks nicer than Lidl's spag rings. (Kids eat them all in any case)
Pasta - all fine.
Lidl
Passata (same price as Tesco) - good.
Veg - mostly good
Potatoes - usually ok but the last sealed bag had a few dodgy ones in
Juice - the 100% juice are nice but not very impressed on some of the "juice drinks" that are less than 50% juice
Frozen Tuna Steaks - actually rather nice, especially compared to the price of fresh from Tescos!!
Icecreams in a wafer - very nice.
Ham - nice
Smoked salmon - very nice
Sorbets in a round tub - the pink ones are lovely (strawberry one and mixed fruit).
However - the sorbets (in a round tub) that aren't nice are:-
Apple and Lychee - tastes very much like cheap apple flavour sweets
Banana - has an aftertaste like perfume - not very bananalike and not very pleasant!!working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -

Theres no way of finding in advance of the fruit and veg offer, the only way you will find out is when its in the leafletsNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20 -

Aldi or Lidl please?0 -
Don't usually eat muselli, but have been converted to the Lidl mueslis, the 50% & 40 % fruit ones are absolutley delicious. Far superior to any other I have tried, and they do have loads of fruit as it says on the bag.
Absolutely agree on the Museli better than anything we have had before.
Love there cheese coleslaw0 -

Karl and Theo Albrecht, the founders of ALDI (ALbrecht DIscount) could not agree on whether to sell cigarettes in their stores. The company was then split into Aldi Nord under Karl Albrecht, who took the north of what was then West Germany, and Aldi Süd under Karl Albrecht, who took the south. Aldi Nord sold own-brand cigarettes (and quite awful they were), Aldi Süd did not.
Both ALDI companies are legally and economically independent entities, although there is cooperation on many levels. Both ALDI enterprises expanded into foreign territory, with Aldi Nord taking most of continental Europe (France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Slovenia and more) and Aldi Süd taking the English-speaking world (UK, Eire, USA, Australia), Austria and Switzerland. Aldi UK thus belongs to the Aldi Süd group under Karl Albrecht. When Germany was reunited in 1990, Aldi Nord under Theo Albrecht took the territory of the former GDR in fraternal agreement.
There is not and has never been any personal, legal, economic or other relationship between ALDI and LIDL.
Lidl was put into its current shape by Dieter Schwarz, who is not related in any way to the Brothers Albrecht. ALDI and LIDL are fierce competitors, in Germany and everywhere else. The recent Aldi strategy seems to be placing very strong emphasis on product quality (high quality products at the lowest possible price), in order to differentiate themselves from the "cheap! cheap! cheap!" image that is the (not exactly unsuccessful) core of Lidl's corporate philosophy.0
