Noticed that Pataks cooking sauces were 99p at my local Aldi in Portsmouth, went to double check prices next door at Somerfields, same sauce was £2.09!!!

Weekly special, though, so grab'em while you can.

Yes! The yeats extract is just as good as Marmite!

    ALDI:
Buy Lemon Meringue Cakes. The package is rubbish and always comes open, but the cakes are addictive.
Buy the "surprise" ice cream. Absolutely delicious. Don't eat the whole thing, though, hehe.
    Buy their "sundae" ice cream.
If you're into it (yeuch!!!), Marmite is £2.18. The original, real stuff.

    LIDL:
Buy "Doppelkeks", the German double layer cookies with chocolate filling in the middle, the ones with that princess on the packing. Dirt cheap and really yummy.
Hands off their maccaroni cheese. Tastes like noodles in washing-up liquid.

Both places also reduce their specials on a regular basis. That's the time to strike.

Boy, isn't this topic popular so haven't checked if this has already been reported.

I live in the sunny sarf but just been to Newcastle-upon-T and tried the local Lidl. The cheap butter there is 'slightly salted' and very like Lurpac, down here the cheap butter is salted. Noted a few other differences (for instance no sultana scones on sale) but most items are the same as down here.
    Nice to save.

Have been shopping at Aldi twice now and so far am really impressed. Just wished I'd bought the Patak's sauces as I'd forgotten how dear they are everywhere else. The bagels are great at 59p instead of the usual £1+ I've spent, columbian coffee, mini shortbreads and the orange juice in the glass bottles are all going down well here. Have got the teabags but haven't tried them yet. Will be looking out for the ice cream and the the sponge puddings for sure. Our Aldi also had Kingfisher lager in. Wasn't sure if this was loads cheaper but thought we would have a treat.
  • Can't agree with a previous posters opinion of Lidls version of Marmite.
It tastes very salty compared to the real thing.
Loads of good buys at Lidl however as nearly all of their frozen food is virtually half price at the moment.
Got a feeling that Aldi have 100% extra free on their Red tea bags. :)
If it's not a bargain, it's not worth buying :D

This is usally regional. Not that offer in our region at the moment and we don't have the 1/2 price veg either at the mo.

Firespire - you're dead right. They do different things in different areas.

I wonder if that Lidl doing half price frozen was anywhere near an Iceland?

The nearer a Lidl is to a major superstore, the more likely it is to do half-price veg on a regular basis.

I believe they use it tactically. If a store is having a tough time because of competition, they put the fruit and veg on half price to bring the punters in.

2-3 years ago I wouldn't have given you tuppence for Lidl's produce. It was crap. But it's much, much better now.
