I shopped at Aldi this week. Good finds were the multipack of tissues -18 packs for 99p and a very decent 'Dove' type body wash at 89p.

Lidl has good olive oil, large bottle for little money. Also they have 18 individual packets of tissues for 89p!

Tried Aldi's lamb shanks in rosemary and mint sauce, and they are lovely. My sister buys hers from Asda for £5.98, but Adi's are £3.99 and just as nice.

Lidls Quiche is very very tasty...tried the pork pies Once...not good

Black Forest Ham and Premium Roast Ham Yummy and reasonable price

Meat seems to me better in Aldi than Lidl.. but only Lidl do Part Boned Frozen Chicken Breasts in my area which are tastier than just the Breasts which can be easily dryish.

Lidl W5 Wasing Up Liquid... hubby would not use anything else

Next week Netto will be selling Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc for £4.99... it's normally £9 in the supermarkets.

I'm told it's a very nice New Zealand wine :)

Another vote for Lidl's Black Forest ham, just tried it - delicious! Will be buying it again.

This is my first post, so I hope it goes ok. I have been shopping at Lidl, Aldi and Netto for about 4 years now. I agree with most of what has been said on this thread (which is very interesting, if a bit long!). One thing I have noticed is that some items have a "rock bottom" price regardless of where you shop - Tescos, Morrisons, Lidl or Aldi. Things I have noticed this with are: baked beans, UHT skimmed milk, flour, sugar (same price everywhere!) and chopped tomatoes - if they go up in price in one shop, they go up everywhere.

That's true, in general, although I found that Cravendale milk was really cheap in Morrison's (cheaper than Tesco's own brand filtered milk - I think 98p as opposed to £1.20, and obviously it was way more expensive in Tesco), so part of it does seem to be if there's an 'own brand' product that's just being launched.

For my recommendations, I echo most of what other people have said.

    In Lidl, I especially like:
    • their cold ham (the green packet with the picture of lettuce, tomato and mushrooms on it)
    • chow mein noodles (with a bit of soy sauce on them, they taste just like the ones you get from a takeaway)
    • juices
    • peanuts
    • toiletries and 'feminine' products
    • Sirius muesli bars - only cost ~70p for a pack of 6, and are delish (although I'd advise against the chocolate and banana one - yuk!)
    • herbal teas, especially the Rooibos (redbush, which is quite expensive in other shops) with orange (vanilla flavour a bit sickly)
    • esserts, especially the golden syrup sponge (chocolate one not very nice).
    • Their bath foams are gorgeous, especially the mint & eucalyptus one; they actually use extracts of whatever it is, and it's really strong; my bathroom looked like a bubble factory after using it because I assumed it would be quite weak, but actually it produces as much foam as Badedas, for instance.

Aldi's shower gels also super. Smoothies and desserts very good too.
