How to cancel Setanta Sports

• Hello, I recently posted a problem I had with this appalling, horrendous company. As mentioned previously I tried to leave this outfit the correct way in line with Setanta Rules. One major problem I had with them as a customer was that they set up a second account for me for a reason unknown. They also took random payments at various points of the month. Because they were taking these random payments and also charging me twice per month and totally ignoring my requests to cancel I decided to cancel the direct debits.
Then come the phone calls and Court threatening letters. They continued to ignore recorded letters from me. Out of the blue a couple of weeks ago they offered me £19 as a refund (not enough and also not broken down into why they owed it me and what had gone wrong) and stated this would be given back to me via my account. They know this is impossible as the direct debits have been cancelled.
I can’t risk re-activating the account on the small chance that they will stay true
to the refund as I am 100% certain they will start the policy again and demand more monthly payments.
(Like I said they have not got a clue what they are doing)
I have also received letters saying that they have been told I am thinking of leaving them. Why would I tell them I was ‘thinking’ of leaving them. If you are leaving you ask to leave, you don’t contact them to inform them that you are ‘thinking’ of leaving and leave it at that. Bottom line is that this company is clueless. They can’t wait to get you off the phone so they tell you what you want to hear. They don’t even bring up your details until you start to ask for specific facts.
On one occasion I was told all was well with my account and the staff member hadn’t even taken any details from me. They are not interested in sorting out your problems that they cause. They treat you like rubbish, take your money, mess up your account and then have the cheek to send you letters threatening court action for a mistake made at their end. Then they ask you to stay and ask why are you leaving. STAY WELL AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY.THEY HAVE ZERO RESPECT FOR CUSTOMERS, THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. THEY NEVER ADMIT TO BEING WRONG, THEY WILL TAKE MONEY FROM YOU WHENEVER THEY LIKE. THEY ARE HARD TO TRACKDOWN IN TERMS OF CANCELLING AND COMPLAINING!!!!!!!!! JUST CHECK OUT THE INTERNET TO SEE THE HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE AFFECTED BY THESE IDIOTS. THEY NEED INVESTIGATING PROPERLY.IF THEY CANT DELIVER THE SERVICE THAT IS OFFERED THEN THEY SHOULD BE SHUT DOWN BEFORE THEY CON OTHER PEOPLE OUT OF THEIR WAGES AND CAUSE MORE UPSET AND BOTHER.

• Zipman,

I'm with you. I sent an email to requests@setanta.com stating I wanted to cancel. The next morning I went to the bank to cancel the DD. That afternoon I got a reply from them stating cancellation would be 30 days after my next billing date which was 15 days away. A few days later I get the automated call and stupidly press 1 to speak to an agent. This guy's using all the stalling tactics under the sun and eventually gets round to telling me I owe them another month. I ask him to send me an invoice and I'll send a cheque. He says just send a cheque to an address in Ireland. I said ok.
Next day a phone call from Setanta (another NE England guy) stating I owe them another month's money. I tell him I spoke to a guy about this last night.
Half an hour later another call from Setanta (Irish girl) who wants to know why I'm leaving and would I be interested in a reduced rate. I said no way.
Five days before my billing date Setanta cut the service with me missing out on a whole weekend of football. Well I was going to send a cheque but not now I thought. What guarantee would I have they would switch it back on and besides they've broken the T&Cs by terminating my already paid-for service.
A few days later I get the warning letter re debt agency and credit rating blacklist. I plan to ignore any phone calls and correspondence from them. These guys are unbelievable.
• i phoned on the 24th march to cancel and was told could not do by phone i had to either write or e-mail (was given the wrong e-mail address) . Phoned bank straight away to cancel debit just in case ! they havr rang me saying 30 days notice to be given or debt recovery will be involved .I informed them my agreement states £6.50 a month not £12.99 they have taken which does not have a time limit on .Chap says that was for three months only , so i politely told him that the direct debit guarantee states :If the amounts to be paid or the payment dates change ,Setanta Transmissions (uk)ltd will notify 5 working days in advance of the account being debited!!! guess what i haven't had . Told him i had a law degree and that they had acctually broken their own terms and conditions to which he apologised .Will keep you updated on the outcome .VICTORY TO THE WORKING CLASSES:T

Why are people cancelling DDs the same day or day after cancelling? Your contract isn't over at that point and you are just creating hassle for yourselves when the company demand the next payment due.
• In a previous call I was told by an agent I could cancel before the 17th of the month. He didn't say anything about 30 days after billing date. I cancelled the DD before they replied to my email request to cancel then I was informed about the 30 days after billing date.

I was prepared to send a cheque but they cut transmission before I sent it. Why should I then pay them anything else? They broke the contract, not me. They would have accepted any form of payment before the billing date and they failed to provide a service that I paid for.

Furthermore why do they insist on 30 days after billing date, as no other company I've had dealings with insists on this ridiculous condition, when they can cut you off at will?

Told him i had a law degree

Do you actually have a law degree or were you just trying to scare them? Still pretty clever thing to say even if you haven't.

Having signed up recently to Setanta Sports channel I had cause to complain when after a week I hadn't received any pictures. I had called several times during that week, with very little help from staff, suggesting my sky equipment was at fault. I had to repeat several times during my frustrating calls that all Sky equip was working fine.
I then chose to cancel my subscription on the grounds that I couldn't be expected to pay for a product I was not getting.
I was referred to the T&C's, which, to this day, I have not received. I was told I was expected to be fully familiar with them from their website, which I was not aware of. At no time during my sign up over the phone did any agent mention T&C's, rights to cancel etc. Of course not!!
I'm having trouble now cancelling my subscription as customer service is near non existent and very unhelpful, with staff just pointing me to the T&C's.
I strongly recommend giving Setanta a miss. It's reminding me of the internet scammers!

According to Martin, the address for directing mail for unsubscribing:
Send the letter to the following address

Setanta Sports
PO BOX 182
The Quays
Newry
Co. Down
BT35 5AT

However, the terms and conditions page of Setanta mentions the postcode as BT35 5AS, the rest of the address remaining the same.

Any ideas as to which is the correct one? Maybe this insignificant difference might have caused problems for many?

..and another point worth mentioning...
the terms and conditions from Setanta also states the following:
If you pay monthly and wish to end this Contract precisely at the end of the Minimum Term then you may do so by giving written notice, such notice to be given between 10 and 15 days after the start of this Contract.
So maybe the 30 day notice isnt necessary after all!

I'm a postman. Loads of people get postcodes wrong (some more than othes) but if it says Setanta on it, thats where it will have gone. Eg. A letter simply addressed to Edith Bowman, London would 99.99% go to Radio 1 etc.

On the plus side, I've only had one phone call from Setanta since their bailiffs threat. They asked me if I would like to reconnect. I politely told them to stick it :)
