The conkers definitely work, with me being absolutely phobic and getting worse every year, after we had had the first 2 tarantulas in September we placed conkers all around the skirting board in the lounge, dining room and bedroom and have not had one since, saw a couple of small ones in the spare room yesterday but no biggies0

They have very fragile bodies, so when the conker hits them they get splattered - you need a very good aim though!Stompa0 -

But please, please don't kill them! They are really important to the eco system. Put them out by using the cup/card method.
If I could stand to catch them in a cup and carry them outside, I could probably tolerate them in my house.
As it is, just the sight of them makes me want to kill them.
Anything in my house with more than four legs, or less than two, must die.:beer:0 -
This thread has made my skin crawl! I'm now scanning the room looking for the little blighters.
I'll be trying everything recommended on this thread (I opened a Notepad doc at the beginning of this thread and have been taking notes!), as I hate spiders. I can't stand to be around them, and just scream until someone catches them.
Hairspray works well if you're stuck alone with the spider, it freezes them so they can't move (hardly surprising as they've now got a ton of plastic on top of them). At least you know it's going to be in the same place whilst you run to get someone to move it!Everyday I am asked to be a magician, in a world where magic does not exist.0 -
Sounds crazy but go and pick some conkers and put them by your windows and doors - you won't get spiders coming in then.0

I hate , hate, hate them! But this is a compulsively awful thread and I've had to read them all, even though I've gone all cold and shivery.
I have to deal with them myself because OH is worse than me, and I can't just ignore them. I use the glass and card method (can't deal with dead ones) then I put them in the loo because someone told me that they bend their legs and hold onto an air bubble so they are sent far away from me but I don't have the guilt (or the corpse!) to deal with.
My OH says the air bubble isn't true, and they die a slow horrible death and will come back to haunt me, anyone out there know the truth?0 -
I love my spiders, always have a few around the house but very few flies .
I will post a picture of Fred my favorite later as he only seems to come out at night, he is quite impressive about a 3 inch span across the legs and is hand tame .

:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:) may be scared off the thread if it's one of the massive ones and the picture is visible on here
I saw something further up the thread about lavender keeping them away, so I've massacred the lavendar plant in our garden and as well as the nice scent I'm still waiting to check-in my first arachnid0
