For the first couple of months I saw no spiders at all......then they started to move back in. Now, I know it's autumn their busy season, but I see at least one spider every day.0 -
Arrgh - loks like its spider season again. Just had a huge one above the window. Happened last year - after 3 of the things I sprayed the room with Indorex and didn't get anymore will look for some conkers when out with dog. Vacuumed this one up after spraying it - please tell me it won't breed in my vacuum cleaner :eek:Never let your sucesses go to your head and never let your failures go to your heart.:beer:0

I have friends who live in France where apparently they like spiders and leave them because they eat the nasty flies they get a lot of - so they don't even sweep away the webs. Yeuch. I am really scared of them and have heard of the conker remedy. Apparently you have to use fresh ones every year, tho I have never tried as OH very good at removing them. My father would NEVER let us kill them, he used to say 'They're very good mothers' and it was only when we were grown up that he admitted he'd made that up - tho perhaps they are. I'm afraid I don't care !0

My mum would never kill them either, she was the only one in our house when I was growing up that wasn't scared of them, me and my dad would leap frog over each other in a bid to be the first one out of the room. My mum always said that if you killed a spider it would rain. My OH is my chief spider hunter now. But he kills them everytime (maybe that's why it rains so much these days:rotfl:), my dog is also quite good at catching them too but he eats them (but only when they run across the floor). I personally think anything that has more than 3 pairs of legs is just wrong, and I am sure that they know that I am scared of them coz they don't jump out on my OH they only do it to me, and my OH knows the spider scream which he thinks is absolutely hysterical . After reading this I think I'll go on a conker hunt as my house seemd to be full of the little critters at the moment0 -
I have mains electromagnetic & ultrasonic repellent devices - one upstairs and one downstairs. I also have two extra battery-powered ones which I move around. I do still get them at certain times of the year, but not in the numbers I used to. Then again, I've been filling cracks etc as I've been redecorating the house.
When you first switch them on you may see more spiders, as they drive them out of the walls... so I didn't dare put mine on! A friend did the first one when I was away and she was housesitting. She was pretty sceptical, but apparently when she came downstairs during the night they were all running across the floor! I did find that when they'd accidentally been switched off, I'd see a few a couple of hours after, and they were usually in motion.
I keep conkers on the stairs as well, and I think they probably do work (but I should probably get some fresh ones, as mine are pretty old). Chestnut wood works as well, but unless you build your entire house from it, it's probably not very practical.
The best thing is to make the house generally inhospitable - so filling cracks, keeping it dry (they like a bit of damp because of their biology), keeping it clean and tidy (nowhere to hide). If I do come across them, smallish ones are squished in loo paper and flushed, larger ones squashed (shoe, book, telephone directory!) then hoovered, or just hoovered if there's no time/it's the wrong place to squish them. I have a dyson, and can't see them in it, but empty it weekly (I wouldn't want to do it just after hoovering them, and I also make sure it runs for several minutes after they go in).0 -
spiders are our friends! seriously....
i live on a street that is incredibly spidery (people always comment) because it is near the marshes, so there are lots of little bugs, mozzies and other flying things for the spiders to eat. when i first moved in i was averagely scared of them, but have realised i would rather have spiders than mozzies and have really learned to love the spiders, even the big ones that sound like mice..."The Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need, but not every man's greed" - Ghandi0 -
While were talking bout horrible critters! Anyone know how to stop slugs coming into my kitchen?!
They come under the door and draught excluder and were talking big green 4 inch fat slugs all over my kitchen floor of a night!
Makes me sick... havent even got a garden either - just a yard with no plants yet... maybe thats why.. maybe they are hungry! lol
Put a line of salt down, not that soppy saxo stuff, proper sea salt. They will die from someting horrible and there will be orange gunge but it stops them and the salt sucks up their horrible slimy stuff.0 -
How can I get rid of spiders, daddy long legs and earwigs. I have considered buying one of those jml bug busters but i am concerned about my electric bill but I don't like killing them. I'm not afraid of them; I'm just sick of the cobwebs.0

If you get rid of spiders, you'll have more flies
As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing thread so that you can see relies there.

I don't believe my spiders eat flies... unless they farm themI tend to find that if there are lots of spiders there are also lots of flies. I think the spiders prefer the woodlice
I had a pest control company round a couple of days ago to deal with birds nests in the attic, and talked to them about this (I'm terrified of spiders...). Apparently in order to spider-proof your home you have to make it air-proof!
You can get ultrasonic/electromagnetic devices that repel pests including spiders. You can also get sprays to put round the outside of doors and windows (pesticide products such as dethlac), sprays for the inside of doors and windows ('green' sprays with horse chestnut & clover extracts), and you can use pesticide bombs to 'fog' the house and kill bugs, but this needs to be done monthly.
TBH, even as a dedicated researcher of spider-extermination techniques, the easiest thing to do is to keep the house tidy (nowhere for them to hide) and clean (no food available for their prey) and then they'll disappear next door! I hoover all the spiders and webs when I clean each room, and remove them as and when I see them. Removing the clutter has helped enourmously.0
