I guess you should all be glad you don't wake up in the night to see this above your bed:

I once visited my brother-in-law in Cairns, and they live a bit out in the sticks, and there was something not dissimilar to that on the wall of his house. Fortunately he had some spray stuff to kill it, but I still had to walk past with it only about a couple of feet away from me.

And my wife wants to move there? Don't think so!!!

Do they have things that big in New Zealand? We're thinking of emigrating in a few years, but if I have to put with things like THAT in my house, maybe we will have another look at it, eh :p

"WHAT IS DETHLAC AND WHERE IS IS SOLD" PLEASE ?

Dethlac is a surface spray that creates a laquer layer that kills crawling insects a few hours after they walk over it. It works for months even on concrete. Although it can be used indoors, I only put it around doors frames, windows and sills out side. I used to get it in our local ironmongers but after they closed, I found it in garden centres and Wilkinsons. It's usually kept with pest killers such as mouse and rat killers more than with fly spray.

I don't like the idea of killing anything at all, but I'd sooner have flies on my dinner than a spider anywhere in my house. My outhouses are attached to my house and this appears to be their main home. Since spraying out there, we've not had anywhere near the number indoors. Mind you, I've used lavender air freshneners too!

the horse chestnut tree produces conkers (the brown nut inside the green prickly shell)

Actually the prickly ones are sweet chestnut and are edible.

Oh my, I've just sat and read this entire thread now I'm sat here with my skin crawling and itching like mad!

I shall try all tips on here, thanks to all that contributed.

On thing though, the link that Taplady gave, why oh why does a product that is being advertised for people that want to get rid of spiders, presumably mainly targeted at people that don't like them, have a website with a spider crawling over it

  • Note to self: Don't EVER open a link of a spider jumping on someone's finger

I've read every last thread and I shall be applying THE LOT!

Just about everyone I've told about my spider infestation think I'm exaggerating the size but you lot know what I'm saying. I've had around 5 a week for the past 4 or so weeks. My DH works nightshift so I've had no choice but to deal with it. I sit with a big glass bowl, an empty glass and a pyrex lid every evening on the sofa. If it's gigantic then it's the glass bowl awaiting DH return (with a dishtowel over so I don't see it), otherwise it's a 20 minute sweatfest with glass/card/coaster to get it outside. Someone told me orange peel which would probably explain the citronella part. Once, right, the only thing I had to hand was Carpet cleaning foam and I sprayed just about the lot on top of this spider and, heart-stoppingly, out it came like an intrepid explorer on the mountain. eeeeeek

My partner just caught loads of flies and spiders by accident, flies seemed to like the smell of the paint or masking tape he uses on his model cars, they got on and got stuck, then the spiders followed doing the same.

We get some round here where if you put a pint glass over them to catch them their legs stick out, not nice!
One day I might be more organised...........

  • really feel for you with spider problem. I have suffered for years with huge spiders until last year I was told to put conkers on the floor near where they come in. It worked and has worked ever since. Incidentally, while I was on holiday in August my mum thought she would come in and do some cleaning for me. She removed all of the conkers as she thought they were just left there by my kids. Within 1 night of being back home, I had the most enormous spider come into the room. Consequently the conkers are back!
  • I can't get my head round the conker idea. Surely if you've already got spiders and you put conkers round the edge of the room they're not going to leave?
