Haven't got time to read everything yet, but a question for all:

Have been invited to a wedding reception in a couple of weeks......invite says "feel free to wear black tie evening wear"..... what does that mean?!

Do I dig out old faithful black strapless cocktail frock (plain & boring), try & hire (can't find a hire place here), buy (don't really want to spend too much cash) or stalk Ebay for a week?

And what am I looking for - cocktail, long, fancy...???

Just to help - going with DF & gay friend (both wearing DJ & black tie) so want to look "nice" for them, am a 40-something who is a not particularly svelte 5'5"......but can't upstage the bride ;)

    Thanks for any suggestions!

Big hug and I am so sorry about Phoebe.

Woke up at six desperate for a cup of tea and have been on the computer ever since.

Have had a low carb brekkie and shykins and tinkerbelle have very kindly posted recipes for low carb cake and bread!

DH is booking a meal for five of us at the Thai restaurant tonight so looking forward to that.

DD(23) is on holiday in Vietnam but sent me an e mail to wish me Happy Birthday!"

Other DDs want to help me straighten my hair etc before we go out. Not sure wether they want to spoil me or just think I am a scruffbag!;)

I am hoping to impress DDs (19 and 14) with the fact I got a Happy Birthday message from The Kaiser Chiefs!

Big hug to everyone and thanks for the good wishes.

Floss - I'd wear your cocktail dress and then perhaps jazz it up with accessories. Have you got a colourful shrug or bolero jacket you could wear with it or just some nice jewellery - either big and bright or sparkly?

    Just a suggestion

I hate those kind of problems Floss2. do you know anyone else who is going and see what they are wearing. don't think you can ever go wrong with a little black dress, but weddings are usually more colourful events...although these days who knows. someone at work got married few weeks ago and the bridesmaids wore black.
happy birthday to the birthday people, sorry to hear about phoebe, and hope everyone who is poorly is feeling better, special mention for Jayward!

yesterday was a total washout. won't bore you with the details...but Families!!!
then I got caught in a huge traffic jam - 45 minute journey took nearly 2 and half hours, just as I was relaxing/de-stressing having something to eat with a little drinkie the dog threw up on the carpet...summed my day up!

today - its been pouring again. plan is to have a "me" day. although I haven't decided what that means yet :)

It's a "black tie optional event" which means either a cocktail dress (knee length or below) or a long dress are equally appropriate.

The cocktail dress with a stunning wrap over it? Or accessorised with a fab hat? By the way, for my works May Ball this year I bought a full length, red satin ballgown for £14.99 on EBay - new, from China, so the postage cost more than the dress :rotfl:

I would think black tie was a step down from full evening dress i.e. ball gown.

I hope you will not be offended but have you thought of looking in a charity shop in a really posh area as you might find something that has only been worn once.

You could also try TKMAXX as they usually have some lovely dresses for around £20 or so.

It's such a perfect day, I'd like to spend it with Troooooooooooooo :D

If you go into Tru's User CP (see top of the page) you can the go to "Edit Options" and disable PMs, so that we'lll remember not to send them to Tru ;)

Anniestar - so sorry to hear about Phoebe

Moliere - it's lovely to read your posts, you sound so happy

Stef - hope your dd gets some help soon now that she's decided she wants it, it can be a real nightmare though to try and find a counsellor

Taplady - hope the service goes well

On the Harrods note, sure I don't remember paying for the loo, perhaps it's free for kids and I just sort of snuck in! ds was told off for having the hood on his hoodie up and almost refused entry, in his defence it was up cos it was cold and wet, anyway the doorman apologised profusely when he realised he was accompanied by an adult - made me feel all grown up and old, it's not very often that I pass for respectable lol!

  • Redruby, that’ll teach me to skim-read & think I understood everything….lol!!!!

((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((anniestar)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) I hope Phoebe went peacefully & I am sure you made her last few weeks as comfortable as they could be, you tried to hard to make sure she had the best of care you could possibly get her.

If I’ve finished my work letters & I can figure it out later, I might try & join you for the scrabbly thing…. J

Taplady, yep Troo/Tru is the same person – just with a multiple personality disorder….;)
WannabeSybil, your cat sounds like a real character… !!
Stef, glad to hear your DD(19) is at a stage where she is ready to get some help; it can be very easy to “lose” yourself when it feels like you’re at everyone’s beck & call…((((hugs)))) for her and you.
LTS, it’s alternating between sun one minute & torrential rain the next here. I couldn’t put my heating on atm anyway as there are just open pipes in the bathroom. I need to find a plumber to install towel radiator (the one my builder sent round for a look hasn’t been seen since!!!!). I always worry about getting ripped off, so I must ask around & see if anyone knows someone personally they can recommend.
Oops Betheebee, will they still do the blood test? Did you manage to stop DH before he’d had too much?!
Floss2, I think I’d either stalk Ebay, or see if you can “personalise” the black dress, either with ribbon or a corsage or something like that? Perhaps something sequiny along the bottom hem? How lovely to have a chance to get all dressed up though, I’ve forgotten what that’s like. (Edit: just read JJ’s suggestion that you do the same, lol – great minds, eh?) Having said that, I got a red satin long dress from TJ Hughes a few years ago for £14,99, then got a red see-through chiffon blouse (tie front) in a charity shop to wear over the top – it was almost identical to an outfit I’d seen in Debenhams for something like £150 – I was very pleased with myself J
Elona, how on earth did you get a message from a band?!?!?
Dogrose, you definitely deserve a “you” day from the sound of it!!

Anyway, must dry my hair & head off to Falmer. See ya later!
