IB stopped due to NI mistake

Scousebird wrote: »Is it me or are people being harsh on the OP-you don't expect a Government department to make such a shocking mistake. And more to the point-if it was a tax issue and someone had been overcharged by the inland revenue for 20 yrs, I am sure that the discussions here would be a little more sympathetic from some (not all) of the fellow posters on here.
And MS is a terrible, incurable disease that effects your central nervous system and that includes your mind so I can understand if the OP has trouble recalling her past jobs-I mean c'mon, I struggle to rememeber what I had for dinner yesterday, never mind what I was doing 20rs ago!!
I really hope Katye gets herself sorted and the benefits system get a grip-my Grandad is going through a similar battle with the DWP at the moment and both him and my Nan have been without money for 3 weeks, it's discusting as people need the money to live on, which is why we have a benefits system that we pay into, so that should we need support in situations that are out of control or are unforseable (eg Critical Illness like Kayte's condition)-that something can help us-not hinder us.
That's my 2p anyway.
I'm sorry you see people's comments as harsh but it's difficult to give advice to someone who won't/can't provide the basic information required to help them. As I said before, I can't see why anyone would have difficulty in remembering where (or if) they worked somewhere at any given time; how would you be able to fill in job applications if this were so difficult? The OP doesn't post like someone with any mental problems and is managing quite adequately (and correctly) to fight her corner, contact her MP etc. To suggest that she's mentally incapable because of her condition is very patronising of you, in my opinion!
IB is not only dependent on needs but it's also dependent on contributions, if the OP didn't make them for the appropriate period then she isn't eligible and there's nothing anyone can do about that. Obviously I hope that this will be sorted out soon and that, if contributions were made, they'll be found quickly.0 -
I don't think I can explain anymore, I have memory problems, which is memory impairment due to remitting & relapsing MS.
recalling long term & short term in a relapse is so hard when you are asked for the finest details since you were 16.
Sorry if people struggle with concept of why I can post now yet not remember 20+ years ago, but the above is the reason why.
I'll finish on this forum now, as theres nothing more I can add, and I'll await the outcome over the next few days/weeks.
thank you

If you are unable to remember whether or not you were working over the relevant period, how can you be contesting the withdrawal of IB? Surely it can only be because you're sure that you were working that you feel that you have a case?
One way or another, I hope you get this sorted out quickly.0 -

Well, actually, out of the two people involved in this fiasco, the OP is probably the lucky one!!
The other person involved, who has now claimed benefits may be just as in need of that money and just as ill - maybe even more. But perhaps they haven't any other income to fall back on and had to go weeks without anything?
At least the OP has money coming in!
It is highly probable the other person had a long wait and were possibly even told they didn't exist in the system, or were claiming fraudulently before it was realised they were sharing a number with the OP! How stressful will that have been do you think - especially for someone who has clearly not claimed anything before?
As for govt departments messing up - yes they do - all the time in fact.
The sad fact is it is often down to the claimant to find proof and that is what people are trying to help the OP with. Getting antsy rather than answering questions will not solve the problem I'm afraid.
OP - you need to channel your frustration into dealing with the situation as stress will only make your memory worse, and (rightly or wrongly) you will receive a much better reception, and help, from people (benefits agency and the like) if you keep your cool.
I hope this all gets sorted out promptly too.0 -
Just an update, to anyone who is going through something similar, my employment credits have been recovered ,found in the other persons account whom I shared the same NINO with- IB will be reinstated with immediate affect and backdated. I now have my original NINO back, and my records are now being reset to reflect this. Letter of apology on its way according to HMRC & DWP
The lesson I have learn't though all of this is, if you know you are right, hang in there and don't let folks make you feel you should sit back and accept a decision that is 100% wrong.

Thank you Hassie, and I am sorry to hear that your brother suffers with this horrendous illness aswell as dementia, its very cruel, and hard on families aswell as the patients.
Life is hard enough without flies in the ointment like this to cause relapses, as I guess you'll know.x0 -

Who told you to sit back and do nothing?0 -
If I had listened to the advice of my MP and the CAB, I wouldn't have had this reinstated, the general opinion was " well they can't be wrong can they?" ...
well they were, and sadly many others will be caught up in the same fiasco, if not now- later.0 -
