Katye I don't think for one moment that bestpud meant it that way-I certainly didn't. However it now seems you weren't entitled to this benefit all those years ago. I don't know what you would have done in your difficult circumstances without it-I can't imagine, but due to an error you were paid it.Is your partner caiming everything that he is entitled to? How about attendance ,carers allowance etc? I don't know about these benfits, maybe one of the experts on here could advise you how to plug the hole if you post your partners income and more information.

Attendance Allowance is for those claiming over the age of 65 if not in receipt of DLA care before 65.

Carers Allowance cannot be paid if someone earns more than £95 per week.

done well out of it.. I'm guseeing you mean financially ? I am housebound, & have an incurable illness, If you think I wanted to be in this position you are sadly mistaken. I would have rather been working fulltime, than relying on people coming to turn me over in bed, and help me to the toilet.

and I hope that you never find yourself in the same position.

My stress levels are at an all time high as my heating is on even in the summer, so the winter will probably kill me as I won't be able to afford to pay my bills.. so yes " I've done very well out of this"

I'm sure that nobody meant anything unpleasant. However, you still haven't answered my first question; are you saying that you SHOULD have received IB for all those years (in other words, had you made the necessary contributions) or are you just angry because you've been used to having the extra income? You must surely know whether you were employed during the relevant period, even if there has been a muddle over your NI/tax records. Even if you don't want to tell us, you need to be clear as to exactly what you're making the complaint about. I really don't see how your anger is justified if you were never actually eligible to receive IB for this period..

I am angry because my work record had disapeared along with my NI contributions, and I mean completely gone!.. its only because of an NI individual caseworker that some of my employment history is now starting to come to light and credits are being found, and will hopefully reinstate my IB. The computer within the HMRC has mixed employment records up and I have got caught in the mess of it, along with many others from what I have read .

I came here for help & advice as I didn't know what to do- thanks for the people that gave me advice, and I can assure you melodramatic I certainley am not... but a rather uncalled for comment I think.

Just in case you think I am worrying for nothing, here is an article showing my issue isn't isolated

I only wanted help not to be made to feel I should be grateful I ever got IB at all.

Your posts aren't at all clear and this is not helped by you getting defensive! Have you actually read your response and thought about the way you come across?

Now we can finally see what you are asking about but still, if you have claimed IB in error then, yes, you would be lucky to have received it at all, wouldn't you?

If you were entitled to it then I am sure they will sort it out for you and now we know what you are asking, someone on here may be able to help.

I appreciate that your records have gone missing and you might run into difficulties proving things but YOU must know whether you were working for the appropriate number of hours over the relevant period. This is still the issue that you haven't addressed on here and it's the most important part of your situation.

To be fair to the OP remembering what you were doing for a 4 year period as much as 17-21 years ago isnt easy even more so when you not at your best. Hopefully things will be sorted out one way or the other for the OP and others affected by this problem.

It has been hard to prove my employment the forms were pretty complex, I am only 40 so was only a youngster way back then ,who never really thought beyond the next wage packet
I have MS and have had to rely on family to help with hours, dates /periods of employment etc to recall.. so as you can imagine the brain isn't what it was but hopefully with everything I got written down, I have covered what they need.

Apologies if I seemed defensive, thats not how I am.. just so stressed as I never thought I'd have to go through this, and its made me so ill with worry.

    Thanks anyway everyone.
  • Were the criteria for claiming IB the same 20 years ago?

Oh come on! It's hardly a question of where you were on a particular evening! I don't think most people would have difficulty recounting their job history for any given period, certainly within a couple of months.
  • Is it me or are people being harsh on the OP-you don't expect a Government department to make such a shocking mistake. And more to the point-if it was a tax issue and someone had been overcharged by the inland revenue for 20 yrs, I am sure that the discussions here would be a little more sympathetic from some (not all) of the fellow posters on here.

And MS is a terrible, incurable disease that effects your central nervous system and that includes your mind so I can understand if the OP has trouble recalling her past jobs-I mean c'mon, I struggle to rememeber what I had for dinner yesterday, never mind what I was doing 20rs ago!!

I really hope Katye gets herself sorted and the benefits system get a grip-my Grandad is going through a similar battle with the DWP at the moment and both him and my Nan have been without money for 3 weeks, it's discusting as people need the money to live on, which is why we have a benefits system that we pay into, so that should we need support in situations that are out of control or are unforseable (eg Critical Illness like Kayte's condition)-that something can help us-not hinder us.

    That's my 2p anyway.
Loan-£3600 only 24 months of payments to go!!!
