I can't see where to click to start a new thread so hoping some kind soul will advise me if this post goes to the wrong place. Did look through threads but couldn't see my question. All I want to get for my dog is liability insurance in case she causes a road or another type of accident I am not bankrupted. I am not interested in the health insurance aspect of pet insurance. Thanks. Sydneyr

If you have house or contents insurance do look at your policy as you are usually covered on that

Try NFU. They are time unlimited, and cut AXA by about £7 a month. Please do check that it is like for like or close.

I spoke to NFU today and they said they can only offer pet insurance as part of a household insurance policy - so you cannot get it as a stand alone policy.

Perhaps richleeds was trying to insure something other than a dog or a cat?

    Hi guys
Have any of you tried these guys, they're a 'per condition' insurer with no time limit. I insured my dog (med mongrel 7 yrs) & cat (moggie 7yrs) for a monthly premium £13.67, excess £65, £3000 max cover. I thought this was excellent as looked at tesco who wanted £14.44 for £2500 max cover and limited to 12 mths . Healthy pets have other max payouts available - £1000 & £5000, if i'd gone for £1000 it would of been £7.27/mth or £16.16 for £5000. I think these guys are really worth looking at.

No time limit usually means that they will pay out on the condition until the money runs out, then you are on your own - as long as you are aware of that. Also tesco is not for life either.

Just looked at healthy pets policy notes:

"We will cover your pet for its lifetime up to the maximum amount of benefit for each separate condition. (£1000, £3000 or £5000) subject to you renewing your policy with us and premiums being paid up to date".

That is not genuine life time cover, your pot will not be topped up every year, it will deplete over the time until you cannot claim any more on a particular condition if it has met the limit of £1k, £3k or £5k). With a chronic condition those amounts will go pretty quickly.

I just came back from walking my dogs, met a lady with a 6 year old westie in a buggie, he already has arthritis and she has spent £1k on him since January. Think about it, if that continues £5k would be eaten up before he is 8 and then she would have may be 6 years or more to pay out for the chronic condition herself if she chose a policy like healthy pets one. Fortunately she is with M and S which is genuine for life, albeit it they bunged up the premiums and added an excess which they didnt have for the first 2 years :( But it is real for life and I have one of mine on it still as he has an ongoing condition which other insurers wouldnt cover if I moved him. Even then as a pedigree dog he is costing £14 a month.

I see you have already signed up with them. You do have a fortnight to back out though and get a proper life cover? Try some of those we have mentioned in the thread above for a quote.

The problem with this policy is that once you reach the limit for the condition, the cover ceases. So if there was a hip problem, you could reach the £5000 limit in 2 years, and the cover would then cease.

A true unlimited policy would be one that pays out a set amount EVERY year as long as the premiums are paid.

There are only a few, AXA, Petplan, NFU, Halifax, HSBC with true time unlimited policies. Even these insurers have maximum cover policies, and these are obviously cheaper!

I used the link to find my local office, called them and they told me that I can only have it if I have an existing home insurance policy.
