Try ringing again - quote their website - I had a quote from them a couple of months back and there was no question of having to have home insurance with them, nor does their site say you need to do that for a cat or dog.0

I used the link to find my local office, called them and they told me that I can only have it if I have an existing home insurance policy.
Don't know what your local office is up to!
I have just bought a policy from them, and I don't have any other insurance with NFU Mutual.
Use these numbers for their quote line:
0800 316 4661*
8am – 8pm weekdays, 9am – 12.30pm Saturday
They will quote you, send you a mail by first class, and you can then either call them back or reply by mail to buy insurance.0 -
did someone say that M&S pet insurance is good?
i'm tempted to go AXA but would like something a little cheaper if possible!
Did i also get it right in thinking that HSBC is just basically AXA? They are my bank so could I get a good deal on pet insurance through them?
Thanks all.....0 -

It seems their premiums have gone up a bit, they have changed their underwriter to Royal Sun and Alliance. It is a true life cover though.
HSBC will resell AXA, but might get a cheaper rate if you are a customer
Ensure that you are aware of the level of insurance you are getting, and also make sure you get quotes from all possible providers.0 -
Axa don't have a % as part of the excess but M&S do & for me Axa was cheaper too, the % can be a problem if you make a large claim0
-
if you go direct to AXA you don't have to worry about any possible changes in underwriters, hence changes to the policy.
they are one of the few insurers who do not discriminate aginst the older pet, most insurers charge a % of the vet fees as excess on top of a fixed amount once a pet turns a certain age, AXA just charge £75 excess.
i have found the claim procedue with AXA to be speedy and hassle free.0 -

I agree. My shortlist was: AXA, PetPlan, NFU Mutual.
I chose NFU mutual, it suited my conditions better.
All three are not underwritten by other insurers, likelyhood of major changes in premia are lesser.0 -
the quote from M&S was much cheaper than AXA so thats why im tempted! Our dog is just turning 3 and AXA quoted me £234 with a £75 excess. M&S quoted £183 with a £70 excess) so quite a bit cheaper!
I'll check out PetPlan and NFU but I get the feeling they'll be more expensive than AXA... I think I got a quote from PetPlan before and, even though they have a great service, you really have to pay for it!
Thanks everyone. Any more advice greatly appreciated!
EDIT: just got an online quote from PetPlan and its a lot more than the others, £47 per month - Ouch!0 -
I'm having a nose round at the moment and this thread has helped alot.
I found Tesco's to be really reasonable......... but having read this thread, you are not fully insured I guess with them. Re this life cover thing.
My pups 8 months old and I really don't know what to get for the best.Genie

always choose a true 'for life' policy - m&s, axa, petplan, nfu to name a few.0
