  • Just been having a quick read through of this thread and spotted the info on tesco extra cover which is £4,000 per condition. If you go for standard cover it says £2,500 per condition up to 12 mths.

So is the extra cover, for life policy then?

I've done a quote with them for 3 pets, 1 dog, 2 cats and it comes out at £25.07 per mth. Do pets have to have jabs up to date?? I was honest with the quote, my dog is up to date, but my cats aren't. I guess the quote reflects this??

the quote from M&S was much cheaper than AXA so thats why im tempted! Our dog is just turning 3 and AXA quoted me £234 with a £75 excess. M&S quoted £183 with a £70 excess) so quite a bit cheaper!

I'll check out PetPlan and NFU but I get the feeling they'll be more expensive than AXA... I think I got a quote from PetPlan before and, even though they have a great service, you really have to pay for it!

Thanks everyone. Any more advice greatly appreciated!

EDIT: just got an online quote from PetPlan and its a lot more than the others, £47 per month - Ouch!

Pet Plan and M&S are both on Quidco, so if you sign up with either of them you will get cash back.

i don't think tesco is true for life...they will give you £4000 per condition with no time limit on claims i.e. you can claim £4000 for a condition for the duration of your pet's life, once that £4000 has been used up then you are on your own. a true 'for life' policy will offer you an amount which renews each year i.e. you would be able to claim £4000 each year for the duration of your pet's life for an ongoing condition.

check the policy wording or give them a call and ask them if the amount for vets fees renews each year with the policy.

as for the jabs - i don;t think it affects the quote - but your cats will be excluded from any illness (or associated illness) that the jabs are meant to protect against.

We have just got tesco insurance for our two dogs a Rottweiler and a Doberman both under 1 one company I phoned wanted over £60 each per month tescos is doing us a policy for £25.35 a month covering both for up to £2500 each the excess is £60 not sure how good they are at paying out and that is the most basic policy but its really good as you can choose to be covered for travel to Europe, death and various other things for just a few pounds extra per month for both of them and got 20% of for applying on line have phoned them with a querie and got a quick answer even though I went through to the wrong department.
In answer to the person who asked why you would want them on the same policy the reasons I like it is 1 its one less form to fill in
2 one less piece of paper to have in the house and to know where to put
3 one less thing going out of the bank
and 4 you often get discounts as the insurance company doesn't have as much to do either

With dogs as large as Dobes and Rotties I would be worried about only having £2500 worth of vets fees for their whole lives.......one major problem with one of them would soon wipe out that amount. X-rays, anaesthetics, ops, are so costly these days........and you just never know what's round the corner.

you get what you pay for, the premiums are cheap because you are only able to claim for only £2500 for the whole of your dog's life - believe me, that won't go far and should your dog develop an ongoing condition that needs treatment for life then the pot could soon be exhausted. but at least you have some insurance, better than none at all (especially if you are unable to afford the more expensive proper 'for life' policies).

    It does;)

If the OP is happy with her basic policy then she has already done loads more for her pet than the countless posts we see on here from people who have a sick/injured animal but can't/won't spare the money to treat it.

I think of the value polices a bit like the NHS & the all-singing-all-dancing ones as private healthcare.

The NHS is good enough for most, it has to be, so few can afford private.

...but that is exactly what i was saying when i said that atleast the OP had some insurance in place, better than none at all. i guess my statement can be read either way, depending on what side of the bed you climbed out of this morning :)

also, you should know by now Mrs E that i am not one of the snipey, negative ones on here...
