  • I agree completely, pet insurance is the best thing you can do for your animal. Hope everything turns out ok for your pet..
  • Hi all.

My dogs are currently insured with Petplan and I'm paying £47.90 pm for the two of them. #1 is a two and a half year old Border Collie, #2 is a three and a half year old Springer Spaniel.

    Is that a reasonable price?

    Thanks all.

    Martyn.

  • I have a pug who costs £22.21 a month with pet plan. He gets £4000 a year vets fee's paid for life. Personally I would stick with pet plan.
    Virgin CC=£2652, Next= [STRIKE]£102.88,[/STRIKE] Very=£475.60, Natwest=£800, Sainsburys CC=£1777.02, Lloyds CC=£498.29, Lloyds Loan= £13,946.18, Car=£4000Total = [STRIKE]£26,147.23[/STRIKE] £23,849.09:eek:
  • my 4 year old mongrel is insured with halifax for about a fiver a month, for £1000 worth of cover. Was about 9 quid a month I think if I wanted £4000 worth of cover
  • Now this, I know all about because I have a 3 year old cocker spaniel and a 5 month old great dane pup who we got last week. (Most people get flowers on valentines day!!)

I looked into all these policies, petplan, halifax, M & S, petguard and tescos. Tescos was the best for me.

It is by far the most confusing of all insurances, with the "12 months cover policy" they also don't cover the same injury twice. So, if your dog broke it's leg and needed an op, fine, but if after 12 months (or even 7 years) he developed arthiritus as a result of that break he wouldn't be covered because the 12 months was up. So beware!!! Look into all the policies and decide which is best for you.

My policy with tescos is the "extra" £28 per month (Great Danes are expensive), this is public liability and whole of life cover for vets fees (there is a max payout of £4000 per illness).

When you take it out on line, you get 20% discount, and I also checked the box for NOT having additional cover such as kennel fees for holidays cancelled, hospitalisation etc, because I don't need that.

The quotes are easy to get online, but look into each one very carefully!!

  • Far better to put the money in the bank every month rather than pay Insurance companies.

Pet Plan are generally considered a decent company with a good reputation for paying out.

Be careful of some of the cheap insurances. You want lifetime cover as opposed to ones that are time limited (usually 12 months) in case your pet developes something lifelong like epilepsy, hip dysplasia, arthritis, diabetes etc and a decent amount of annual cover (6-7K). IMO, anything less is not sufficient to cover all eventualities. £1K would be no use to me at all. One of my dogs has required 2 surgeries at £1500 each within 10 months of each other. I would have been massively out of pocket with £1k cover.

E&L generally have an awful reputation for paying out so I'd avoid them.

We pay Argos £10.44 a month for our 14 week old springer spaniel.
  • Has anyone had an issue with an insurer not paying out because treatment spanned the renewal date?
I have made my first claim for my 9 year old dog and have received only £9 of the £190 bill back because the initial consultations took place in one period of insurance and the remainder took place in the following. Pet Protect consider therefore that as the cost of the first consultations were below the excess amount they wont reimburse them and the remainder of the consultation only just exceeded the excess meaning I only get £9 back! In addition when treatment started my excess was £70 but remaining treatment come under the increased £90 excess. I had considered that the entire treatment would come under the excess applicable when treatment started.
I have been insured with Pet Protect for the life of my dog but never claimed before, my premiums are now over £30 per month and I'm furious that because I didn't consider the renewal date before I started treatment I am being penalised.
