Right now the companies which seem to be the most reliable are Petplan, NFU and possibly Axa direct. The market seems to be in flux at the moment, and the companies which were being recommended a year or two ago (M&S, Halifax, etc) have all hiked their prices and/or drastically altered their terms recently.
There are no guarantees though, it could be that the market will settle down again now, and there won't be anymore big changes, or it could be that even Petplan and NFU start to re-evaluate their products.

Before anyone hands money over to this company, I'd recommend they google 'reviews of E&L' and see what experiences other people have had with them. E&L are the underwriters for animal friends.

Recently renewed my two dobermanns with M & S - massive hike - twice as much this year - each costing around £45 per month - am horrified. Feel like M& S have got me over a barrel as they are nearly 9 and have pre-existing conditions (very very low cost so far). Also paying £50 excess whereas nil excess previously. Ho hum.

just insured my cat with petplan (fingers crossed its ok) i went with their middle cover as its for life rather than just 12months per condition its costing me about 11.80 a month which i didnt think was too badnow proud mum to 3 handsome boys :j latest one born 10/10/11:j0

I just insured my 12 week old puppy with the Halifax...Its £12.48 a month with £6000.00 a year cover for ongoing illnesses and after each year its goes back up to £6000.00 if you have made a claim...
I was going with the PDSA 5000 who were cheaper per month and there's gives you £5000.00 per condition but once that runs out thats it.
I have been looking for weeks and found it very confusing...try getting a quote online that you are happy with and ring them up with any questions you might have..thats what I done...Im hoping I have chose the right one.

Pet insurance is the most difficult to get your head around! I have spent the last couple of hours reading the article and forum on this site and then getting on line quotes. The cheapest i have found for my 9 week old labrador is tesco at £8.05 a month which covers up to £2500 vets fees. Has anyone used tesco for pet insurance. Thanks in advance. Going for a cuppa now, feel brain dead after all this research!!0

You need to contact some insurers and find out *exactly* what they will exclude. For example, will they cover him for arthritis? Will they only exclude his back legs, or only exclude his hips? If he develops an unrelated problem (gets run over and damages a leg) will that be covered? What if he develops other joint problems as a result of the accident?
In your case the exact wording of the exclusion will be at least as important as the actual policy. It's probably worth contact them by post or email and asking them how the exclusion will be worded, so that you can compare the answers. When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -
