Need to shop around for pet insurance again.

    I have 2 cats. 1 Siamese who is 6 (Purchased £250) 1 Tonkinese who is 4 mths (Purchased £400)

Does anyone know who is the most reasonably priced at the moment.

I am currently with Tesco for my Siamese and my Tonkinese is still in his free 6 weeks with PetPlan but that expires on 29th March so I need to get him insured as soon as possible.

    Thanks for any tips

I am currently with pet plan but unfortunetly my little cat was killed last week. I have not got around to calling pet plan to cancel them yet. However we are getting two six month old cats next week and I have been trying to get some insurance quotes for them. I have tried pet plan stated that I wanted to insure two cats and it came up with £9.81 a month which is what I am currently paying for Gracie. So any advise for cheap companies for multiple cat insurance please?

Just got my renewal through for my 9 year old GSD and the monthly premium's gone up from £22 per month to £32 per month!

Has anyone tried haggling their insurance premium down with an existing insurer? I've tried it for the car with some success, but never for my dog! I'm reluctant to swap pet insurers as we have claimed for one or two small, short-term illnesses in the past I don't want them being classified as pre-existing conditions of some sort or other with another insurer. Only minor things like a dog bite and odd tummy upsets in last few years, but about six years ago he was tested for Addisons Disease but came back negative.

Can't risk not having my boy insured, but really hacked off that it's going to cost an extra £120 a year when all that's happened is that he's a year older.

I know people who have haggled in the past, especially if your current insurer is offering a new customer bonus, or something like that, then asking them to match that as a loyalty bonus might work. But I've not heard of anything like that happening recently (say in the last year or so). But you've nothing to lose by trying!

Just be aware that if you cancel, even if you reinsure with your current insurer it will still count as a new policy with existing conditions excluded.

At 9 years you'd be hard pressed to find a new insurer anyway.

  • I have a friend of a friend who has just given me a big education on dog insurance (plus of course what I've picked up from this forum!). Apparently the big comparison sites have not yet invested in the technology on pet insurance in the same way as they have for car and home. This is because the commissions they will receive from companies are much smaller because the premium for your cat or dog will be quite a bit less than most people's cars or houses etc. The good news is that it will be coming . . . Not sure on the rules on forum posting and whether I'm allowec to quote this but my source says moneysupermarket.com will offer a full comparison service later on this year.

In the meantime I managed to save my Mum £50 by ringing round a few people. She was previously with M&S and she has now switched to www.healthy-pets.co.uk. The saving was good and the level of cover looks quite comprehensive - has anyone any expereince of this company?
  • Has any one heard of Pet Secure insurance. I have a 9 week old Bichon Frise cross that I want to insure, and they look good on paper but I can find any info about them.

The cover is good but their admin is dreadful. I've heard some real horror stories about people finding out they aren't covered, and having to fight for payout (having been paying premiums for months but no policy was ever created). There are also reports of them getting details wrong on the policy, which again can be used as an excuse not to payout. People have had trouble getting payouts due to HP losing paperwork and documents, it doesn't seem to be deliberate, just completely disorganised.

So if you do go with them, go over your paperwork with a fine tooth comb, and if it doesn't arrive within a reasonable period, hassle them until you do get it.

Never heard of them, can't find anyone who has ever used them. They are underwritten by Axa, which is a good sign, but other than that, who knows?

  • I have decided to insure with them as they seem to be good value (£100 a year for their gold cover) Hopefully I will never have to use it.
