for the proper "life long" quotes, the hsbc quote that we bought was 14.87 per month
marks and spencers was 18.99 per month
    axa was 16.06 per month
    pinacle was 17.64
we didnot get a quote for nfu as you have to phone up and i did not have chance to call

the non "lifetime" ones, ie £4000, 7000 limits etc per condition, varied between 12.95 a month up to 31.00 per month (cant remember the exact prices as we got a lot then decided to check the "lifetime" companies

    Hi

Could anyone advise me please. We have an 11 year old Labrador and our Pet Insurance is very high. £32 per month with Direct Line.
Can anyone advise which insurer is good for an older pet. She is healthy and we have never claimed. Some won't insure an older pet. I am interested in full cover for vets bills but not bothered about the other trimmings such as bording fees and cover for cancelled holidays. Thank you to anyone with ideas.

    Hi,
I just insured my 3 dogs and eldest is 10 yrs old with Healthy Pets
( www.healthy-pets.co.uk ), and all three for £31 a month on bronze level...

10 days exclusion b4 illness etc, £50 excess no percentage ;), unfortunately we had to clam after 16days as our girl contracted pyometra and has to have scans/bloods and then surgery , and they were fine about it all

Healthy Pets is limited to £5k per condition. In your circumstances that may well be enough though.

Halifax are the good sort of lifetime and take dogs over 10 years. Not sure what the premiums are like at that age, but they're competitive for our puppy.

Animal Friends take older dogs BUT (a) they are underwritten by E&L (=v. bad if you're claiming) and (b) the excess for older dogs is 35%!!!!! So avoid unless it's your only option.

Check with AXA, HSBC and NFU (telephone only) to see if they take older dogs and what the excess is. They're all the good sort of lifetime policy.

As like us you're you're not bothered by the trimmings, just ignore them. AFAIK there are no policies that exclude them to help them lower the premium.
  • I changed my insurance for my Tortie cat Maddie in December 2006 from Saga to Sainsburys (she was 13 at the time). When I received the renewal documents in December 2007 for the year 2008, the underwriters Axa had increased the premiums by 80%, yes 80%. Sainsburys Bank were absolutely useless when I complained and simply referred me to AXA who firstly blamed the vets for putting up their prices and then decided that it was because she was this particular breed of cat.

i had a look at them, for us they were not much cheaper, as it worked out at £14.65 per month, and the cover has a lower limit (£5000) and is not a true "full life" contract, `whereas the policy we have taken will pay up to £7500 per year every year, healthy pets states: Do you cover pets for their lifetime?
We will cover your pet for its lifetime up to the maximum amount of benefit for each separate condition. (£1000, £3000 or £5000) subject to you renewing your policy with us and premiums being paid up to date.

so basically once the £5000 is used for that condition it is gone, for for example if my dog developed problems such as hip displacia/cancer/shoulder injuries etc, if one year it costs £2000, the next year £2000 and the year after £2000, for example, the last £1000 and any subsequent costs as a result of that illness would not be covered, where as the hsbc policy will pay up to £7500 each year

I have started my insurance with AXA, its limit is £7,000 per year which is good as its not per condition,i pay £17 a month which was cheaper than petplan and a very similar plan. Does anyone have any issues with AXA(good or bad)? As i am about to make my first claim after only a month!!

  • Hi All,

My little Bagpuss (commonly known as Toby or fatcat LOL:rotfl: ) is currently insured with Petplan. He's a grey tabby that we rescued from the cats and dogs home.:A

In the past year my premium has risen from £6.50 a month to £9.84 a month even though I've had no claims.

I've done quotes with DirectLine and other providers who have come out cheaper but I just get totally mind-boggled when it comes to comparing cover and finding out what I really need!

    Can anyone help?
;)I am not a complete idiot - some parts are missing;)

    Hi,

I've just changed my insurance from Petplan (for our doggie) to Argos - it was half the price and after looking over my policy from Petplan, i've got more cover with Argos too !

I also got £20 cashback taking out the policy via Quidco so i'm well happy ! I think Petplan are good, not slating them in any way, but I think they are very expensive and you could probably find the same sort of cover elsewhere, much cheaper !

I think the best thing is to compare your current policy with what other companies are offering (they usually tell you) and take it from there.

    Good luck !
