I haven't put any monkeys up for sale yet as they are for family members for christmas but...last week when my Cambridge Diet counsellor was here she asked me how much I would charge to make her a union jack monkey. After a quick thing I said £15. Considering they take loads of stuffing, they are over the knee long socks and they take an average of about 4hours from start to finish....add the price of the eyes, I thought that was reasonable. But she said oh..I'll have to have a think about that! Four hours working for just under £3 an hour plus materials. Definately not a get rich quick way to earn money:rotfl:But like Shelley said, they are enjoyable to make.

I know people just don't want to pay. I charge £10 and people have said I should charge more but how much more without them thinking it's too much??? I also include adoption certificates and hand made tags and fabric labels so I don't think it's unreasonable.

Good morning girls. I think you have your answers now pink mummy. I think I can speak for many of my fellow mad monkey makers on here and say.......

We make them lovingly, we sell them reluctantly BUT only so that we can make more. They are fun and pretty quick to do once you have mastered the art, and the love comes from making each one so different to the last one you made.

But can i please just ask this of you for when you do make yours up. Dont try to copy someone elses.... make them your own... thats the joy..

P S One condition of receiving our opinions is that you MUST post your 1st monkey pics on here to prove you succumbed to the making.. and we DONT criticise. we are nice people and dont bite:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

Oh dear I had to go to A&E today after having sudden problems with my vision only to be diagnosed with an eye migraine! No headache just flashing lights and loss of vision - it seems I may have to slow down on the old monkeying - too much eye strain!!!!!

Chatty123; Gorgeous monkeys. Love their little outfits. Must have taken some time to do them.

Shelly3774; Wow it must have been bad to go to A&E :0( Hope your recovered now.
I lose my sight quite often which is to do with migraines. Was very frightening at first as I thought I was going blind. Its happened so many times now that I just sit it out til it goes. Does hinder the crafting side tho which is annoying.

Thanks Pennib I feel much better now after going back to bed and having a lovely 2 hr sleep. I think I am worn out with working, two young children and a husband and I need to slow down a little. It is really frightening though but next time i will know what it is I will be more prepared. Luckily my next door neighbour is an optician and she has popped around and she explained it all really well for me and is booking me in with her this week for another checkup.
I really sympathise with you having migraines - I didn't have any pain and it was bad enough :(

  • Hello, have been lurking about the sock monkey thread back and forth for a while and have decided to have a go ;)
I have a sewing machine which I have no clue about as it was given to me to learn to use .

I would be grateful if some kind soul could give me a list of items to get and best place to get them to get started.

    Love all your pics!

Hi Troythecat you can buy most socks on the high street e.g Dorothy Perkins, Peacocks, New Look, Matalan etc and most sewing and craft shops sell a range of buttons and eyes although there are lots of places online too. Hope that helps x

  • When I made my first one I bought:

    Needles
Standard plain Thread (I use white or black depending on sock colour)
    Household Pins
Poundland pillows (or any cheap pillows for stuffing)
    Assortment of socks
Knitting needle to help stuff legs
Buttons for eyes (large white and smaller black ones) boyes do them. Or you could use googly eyes (99p at the works) or safety glass eyes (ebay).
Felt, if you plan on using felt for features, optional.
Embroidery thread in black for the mouth.
Craft glue is also really useful.

And I also bought 'made with love' heart charms from ebay for them.
