SB44 I buy adults knee length/over the knee socks as I like spider monkeys! They have very long legs, arms and tails. A lot of people on here tend to use ladies ankle socks but people have used all types of socks! It really depends on how big you want your monkey. :)

    That's great, thanks.

I think I will start off small and get some ankle socks to start with.

    ;)
  • ARRGGHH I need buttons- now!! I've just finished my first monkey, but have nothing for his eyes, I've just had a quick scout round the wardrobe but I can't find anything I can steal- my poor blind monkey :(

I just had a look on ebay- those that use the eyes with the backings- do you have to sew those on first from the inside?
Hoping to get money smart enough to avoid working full time and paying extortionate money to a stranger for the privilege of enjoying my two beautiful children for 40+hrs a week until my son is 3 and my daughter starts school in 2012 :D

I found some neo ankle socks in B&M, 3 pairs for £1.34.

They had two different packs, one had 3 lots of black and neo stripes, the one I bought had black with green neon stars, black with neon pink stripes and black with neon yellow spots.

My 11 year old has pinched the stripey ones to wear so I think I will have a go at the star ones.

Wish me luck, I am the type of sewer who wonder webs trouser hems, staples trouser hems, cellotapes trouser hems and hate to admit this one but in an emergency has been know to use chewing gum to keep up a hem! :o Yep, I know but it was an emergency. ;)

LOL - that's my kind of skill level, most of my work stuff was hastily hemmed with selotape in the office, but I've just made my first monkey and am quite taken with him really, I hand sewed, and had no idea about what stitch etc, but they do seem to be quite forgiving really.

I'm amazed at how keen I am to complete mine now, am pondering taking my double buggy on the bus to town on a sunday, just to find some eyes so he can be complete!

Oops! I forgot about the stapling hems too, in an emergency of course. ;)

Well I will def have a go now then.

What are you using to sew them up, normal cotton?

I read that someone uses the invisible thread type of stuff but from experience that is a bit of a pain to sew with as it is quite stretchy.

Afraid so - bit late now for safety eyes.

  • My youngest daughter and partner decided on a cost cutting Christmas last year and made these for everyone and we all loved them...... the wonkier the better! They took my button box so it was lovely for me to see everyones monkey and think 'I remember those buttons from ....'

This year I think they are making candles...........

    :)
  • The invisible thread isnt that stretchy, and I find it works great (And its not to bad stitching with!)
So much for 'Money Saving' ;)

I have used that, but found that it unravelled it self if the monkey was played with.

Think the problem is the ends. If you cut them short they come undone. If you leave them longer, they can be quite sharp.
