I see, thanks. I think the gathering one will be easier (and I have several socks I will be using that one with sewn on hats!!! lol) but this one is for a 1 year old and the hat will probably be removed until they are a bit older so I think I will have to try to do the curved shape.

    Thanks again cuddles.

  • I have a question for you all, which I hope you dont mind me asking (I am a beginner at making sock monkeys!). I bought some safety backed eyes to use as a friend wants one for her son, and I have just cut little holes in the socks to put them in, however, the sock seems to have frayed. How can I get around this please?

Thanks for your help in advance xx

    #2784 mentions a possible solution.
I have also managed to open the fibres of socks to get the shanks of safety eyes through without actually making a hole. Stretch the fabric tight and push the shank through carefully.

I am sorry to butt in again on your monkey thread, I am only having a quick visit.
I have always liked how a number of people can make a monkey from the same pair of socks and then see how they all end up looking so different, some stuffed rounder, the positioning of limbs faces etc. (I have made them with classes and clubs)
I only feel miffed when I see blatant copying of one persons exact style. I had a customer contact me, she was annoyed as she saw what she thought was a photo of group of my monkeys on an ebay listing 'a personalised sock monkey' for buy it now £10 she thought I had overcharged her for the monkey I sold to her and were selling them cheaper to other customers on ebay!
I started off selling my sock monkeys on ebay in 2006 with twin and single pom pom hats and eyes with crosses on but started to get copied so moved to etsy and my own website.
I know I did not invent the sock monkey and I have no problem with people making them, Why should I? They are super cute and fun to make.
I understand that imitation is a form of flattery but you only have to look through this thread to see all the wonderful handmade monkeys with individual personalities and styles that I really feel blatant copying of another persons style is a bit kind of sad.

    Hi Sunsetgirl

I have just returned from a weeks holiday and am catching up on this thread. The photo that would have been sent was mine from Ebay as I do offer personalised monkeys. I started making monkeys after I was shown how to make one by my cousin over 2 years ago. I am sorry if you think they are copies of your monkeys, but I can assure you they are not. I use the cross in the middle of an embroidered eye because it replicates the cross from a 4 hole button (I use 4 hole buttons for my eyes). The hats do have a choice of one pom pom or two pom poms but they are purchased pom poms and not wool pom poms, and I have seen those style hats on other monkeys for sale too. My monkey tails are also quite thin, which I think is different to most others, I stitch my arms on in a way that I believe is my own (I am sure someone else is probably doing it too). As Upsy-daisy has said, there are so many people making monkeys that it is most likely lots of them will look the same, but is unfair to say that someone is copying something.

I also offer to embroider a personalised message on the hat.

So, again, I am sorry if you feel that they are copies of your monkeys but can assure you they are my own, worked out by myself, from mostly trial and error.

Such a shame that all this talk of plageurism seems to have killed this thread.

we can all put our own slant on them
but lets face it, it will have been done the world over loads of times already in one fashion or another
