  • Everyone's new monkey's look great! Shelley, the craft shop woman sounds a right weirdo! I'd stay away. That's no way to run a business. Your monkey's are far from creepy!

Cuddles, Jimmi Hendrix Monkey is wicked! What a great idea!

I've not done any monkey's in a while. Still got one to finish. Unfortunately my eczema on my right hand has flared up terribly and I can't grip properly, let alone weild a needle and thread. Going to the doctors about it this afternoon so I'll be begging for some prescriptive cream to sort it out! I've got a poor monkey with no arms or tail at the moment.

On the plus side, I've had some fabric samples through the post which I'll be using to make accessories for my monkey's! So am happy about that. :)

  • Right ladies (and gents if we have any?!)
I have decided to get some practice in on my sock monkies and make them as christmas gifts from my baby boy to his friends at our local church play group.
There are 7 of them (there will be a 3 month old by then too but think thats too young for a sock monkey) 2 girls and 5 boys. I havent found any decent patterned socks yet which is a pain. Just wondering if any of you had any ideas of styles or themes or anything that would make them special for the kids? I've done 3 so far for family and am getting a bit better at them but have only stuck to basics.
Any advice would be great :D

Sunsetgirl; I know what you mean about people copying bits of your monkeys.

Just found myself mentioned in the forums and thought I would reply!
I use toes and heels on my monkeys each about 50 - 50 of the time. I photograph them straight on looking at camera with no tricks involved!
I came up with the little white crosses on the black eyes years and years ago and it made my monkeys have their different look but am a bit sad to see that now they are being copied on ebay etc.

Hello Sunsetgirl I hope you didn't mind me mentioning you but I noticed you had been mentioned earlier on in the forums:o Your monkeys are a credit to you :) I've always tried to make mine with a fat mouth and tend to use the toe part. I find with the heel it doesn't make them as chubby!
I use the safety eyes on mine and have to make a hole in the sock to attach the eyes to therefore had to use the felt bit to cover this! Tried other methods but this worked the best.

I do admit to copying someones sock monkey once (cant even remember where i saw the original one) but only as a present and I have not done it again to sell as I dont feel right doing it.

I use safety eyes and my first few i made a hole but the eyes can come out eventually especially with how rough my son is. So I get my small crochet hook and put it inbetween the stitching and wobble it around then i get my bigger hook and put that in and wiggle that around making a gap for the eye without break the sock. I find these dont break.

Chasing sunshine - i have made a sock monkey for a newborn. I sewed eyes on with felt and used a lovely soft sock so its cuddly. Her mum takes it everywhere!!! :D My kids loved the pirate one I did and the super sock monkey. I have a few orders for elf ones for xmas and my friend wants me to make a elf, fairy, santa and reindeer sock monkeys!!! They should be fun!!! :P

Pennib - she is lovely. My one looked like a boy when i used the same socks!!! :P

I am sorry to butt in again on your monkey thread, I am only having a quick visit.
I have always liked how a number of people can make a monkey from the same pair of socks and then see how they all end up looking so different, some stuffed rounder, the positioning of limbs faces etc. (I have made them with classes and clubs)
I only feel miffed when I see blatant copying of one persons exact style. I had a customer contact me, she was annoyed as she saw what she thought was a photo of group of my monkeys on an ebay listing 'a personalised sock monkey' for buy it now £10 she thought I had overcharged her for the monkey I sold to her and were selling them cheaper to other customers on ebay!
I started off selling my sock monkeys on ebay in 2006 with twin and single pom pom hats and eyes with crosses on but started to get copied so moved to etsy and my own website.
I know I did not invent the sock monkey and I have no problem with people making them, Why should I? They are super cute and fun to make.
I understand that imitation is a form of flattery but you only have to look through this thread to see all the wonderful handmade monkeys with individual personalities and styles that I really feel blatant copying of another persons style is a bit kind of sad.

That's terrible that someone blatantly copied you on Ebay:mad:! and I agree it is great to see so many different styles etc x
