Thought maybe I should say a bit about me as I have started posting in the threads.

I am in the mid-forties as is DH and we have two children. DD14yrs who is Home Ed and DS12yrs at school. DH is off-sick at the moment having chemotherapy for ColonCancer. Life turned upside down for us when this was discovered last year but the reality of our limited income continues whatever! So DH kind of needs taking care of right now, as does everything else, including the finances.

Finding OS has been a revelation as I had thought I was rather peculiar with my tendencies to make jam, hoist laundry over the Aga and grow my veggies. Nice to find I am in such good company and that it isn't just an "age" thing!

Many of your days sound scarily efficient compared to me but I think reading about them will inspire me. At the moment I am a bit "going down with something" feeling so I need something to enthuse me.

Found I have saved money since joining here already:
Queried my oil bill and it was an error. Saved 50quid.
Told Next that I was not going to pay for the catalogue they sent as I had told them I did not want one.
Put Grocery money in a separate purse which even DH takes when he goes out so have only spent £41 this week. (My target is £350 for the month, so yippee so far).

Sorry I have gone off-topic so I'll stop!
Nice to be here, Have a good week everyone.

    Hi
I'm 45, married with 3 children (11,14,17) and have just given up my job as a travel agent(wasn't enjoying it anymore...too high-pressure, low paid and rotten working hours!). Not planning on going back to work for at least a couple of years, and won't qualify for any benefits etc as OH has decent well paid job. Will need to count the pennies now though as have been used to both wages.
Biggest saving has been ditching the David Lloyd membership...will have to get off my fat butt and walk places to save money and stay fit! I've also made sure of best deals on mortgage, bills etc thanks to this site, but will still be about £200 per month short of what we were used to living on. Will be trying all sorts of OS tricks to try and keep household costs down so we can still afford the great holidays we all enjoy (have always booked the best deals outside of mainstream travel industry giants, so won't be missing my staff benefits!)
This is only my 2nd week at home, but have been enjoying some lovely cheap home-cooked meals, and everyone seems much calmer and happier with this arrangement - so all is good here in Stepford! Mind you, am a bit worried about being bored when all are at school/work as I don't have any stay-at-home friends nearby, and funds won't stretch to endless shopping trips/yoga classes etc. Have any other MSE's been in this position? And what do you do to prevent obsessive-compulsive housework and Trisha-watching? Cheers!
  • well since i've broken my duck and asked a question on OS already i thought it is only polite if i say hello here .

I'm single 34 and live in Bradford - until 18 months ago i worked in engineering research - PhD and stuck in a uni. Then i lost my job and ended up (thankfully) working for the UKs biggest greeting card manufacturer (it starts with an H) in the accounts department. They are now paying for me to go to college part time and do my professional accounting exams - so hopefully by the time i'm 40 i'll be even more over qualified.

i have been inspired to buy a slow cooker from reading OS - and as i type my beef and ale has anoher 5 hours to go :)

    Cheers for reading

I'm a regular lurker, but trying to post more! I'm 25, a research scientist in a university lab, and have been married 3 months. Husband has been at college for a couple of years and is in rubbish admin job at the moment but looking for something better. I'm on short-term (2 years at the mo, that's quite long for science!) contracts, so we're making the most of the current one to save some money before we start having kids - we both want them NOW but making do with a cat!! We bought a little house 2 years ago but if hubby gets a better paid job hopefully we can look for somewhere bigger and fill it with both sprogs and cats!

Its great to read about everyone one here; I often wondered who the regulars were in the real world!!

  • Hi,

Have been posting for a while but haven't introduced myself. I am 30 years old, married with a 2yr old daughter and a big fat adorable dobie. I do work - part-time in finance and full time in motherhood !

I am pretty useless with money and trying to pick up tips from the OS board to make my life less wasteful in every sense from money to enviromentally.

One day I would love to grow my own veg, keep my own animals, recycle practically all waste and bake almost everything from scratch ! - you gotta have dreams !
Currently on a life sort-out !! ...reducing bills, decluttering and getting into fitness - busy bee ;)
