  • 21 and can't find a job? I find that VERY hard to believe. The incoming Polish do very well at finding jobs the lazy youths of today don't want to do. Your daughters boyfriend has a stutter, some of the Polish don't even speak English!!
If teens KNEW for sure they would NOT be looked after and 'molly coddled' they definately wouldn't get pregnant!

Re: the stutter, no excuse at all. I had one, sought help, cured it, passed o levels, started nurse training by 19.

what do u mean family money. were they not making a living as barristers?? i always thought barristers and QCs were the highest paid in the legal profession.
Family meoney means: the family were posh/wealthy.

In this instance the bf's father/mother were exceeeeedingly wealthy. Well beyond the norm. As posh as posh could be.

My sister, not having family money, nor connections, became a solicitor. The bf .... is probably at the Old Bailey by now.

...There's no way most barristers earn over £100k, I'd have said.
      • Typical earnings/receipts for self-employed barristers, before deduction of tax and chambers' charges, range from £25,000 - £150,000 gross within five years of call (salary data collected Feb 07, The UK Legal 500).
      • Typical earnings/receipts at senior levels and before deduction of tax and chambers' charges, range from £65,000 - £1,000,000 gross for ten or more years of call (salary data collected Feb 07, the UK Legal 500).
      • Top Queen's Counsel (QC) can earn £1,000,000+ per year (salary data collected Feb 07, the UK Legal 500).

Perhaps the reason neverdespairgil doesn't earn this amount is because when she isn't always posting on MSE (not just noticed by me)

Most of my work (and OH's) isn't on an hourly rate, that's not how we charge.
No, you & your OH donate your services for free as per the earlier link
...For full judicial review cases, and Court of Appeal cases, I charge an hourly rate...
What is that hourly rate, please?

I don't do pro bono work through a law centre, OH does. I do pro bono immigration work through a number of solicitors.

In my current Court of Appeal cases, £150 an hour. Judicial review is £125 an hour. OH says I'm undercharging, but I'm happy with that.

  • I have been reading this thread with interest and have to advise you about a work colleagues young daughter - she was 19 had never worked apart from part time in a chippy - she got pregnant and was adamant she was keeping it - her boyfriend was no good was 21 never worked - beat her up etc, etc, well her mother said she was not prepared to have the daughter at home after the baby was born wrote the usual letter etc and was given a room in a young mothers place - the place was clean and adequate - she was unable to bring the b/f back mind to stay - she stayed here for about 6 months and now in this area where i live you have to bid for a council place online so she started looking and low and behold she managed to get a place straight away a nice 2 bedroomed flat in a quite nice area - needless to say the b/f stays over 3 or 4 times a week and she never waited years for a place on the council.

So there are ways and means to get a council place so how come it can be done in my city yet not in others.

£150 per hour relates to £273,000 per annum based on a 35 hour working week on a self employed basis.

I'm not saying you earn that, but you could if you opted to (and could secure) that type of work. If you decide to work for nothing (pro bono), that's up to you.

  • There' s not that amount of work around in the COurt of Appeal, oddly enough.

I will probably gross about £80k to £100k this year. Which is about £56k to £70k after Chambers rent etc, and before tax. But I'm lucky, because I'm getting offered lots of interesting, relatively highly-paid work, in an area which is more highly paid than crime.

My best mate in Chambers works all the hours God sends, and is doing advanced work for her Call, and will probably gross about £65k this year.

By contrast, my Head of Chambers will probably gross the same as he did last year, which was roughly £1.25 million.

Don't you think earning £70k per year for part time work is not 'huge'?

How about those earning in excess of £1million per year for full time work? (yes all companies/self employed have overheads to pay), but this is the true reflection of what they charge. Is that not a huge fee?

It's all a far cry from the initial £46 including travel costs and before deductions for 12.5 hours work (including 3 hours travel travel) that you originally implied.

when in private practise anyone is entitled to charge what they deem fit, so long as they have explained their fees in advance to the potential client. then its clients call whether they find that acceptable and to hire that legal team. it is a free market after all. if the client is not happy then they can always find cheaper lawyers.

in private practise one charges depending on ones qualifications, experience, name made in the field and also how much they want to charge for their services. after all no one is forcing anyone to use their services. so i dont see any problem in people in private practise deciding how much they will charge for their services.

even if they normally charge more for private clients, many still do probono work and lower paid legal aid work etc as they get good work experience in intersting cases and also because they want to help people. i dont know about others but atleast i am grateful for people doing probono work and helping people in need. obviously one cant make a living solely on probono work, so they might work part time in private practise or because of child care issues etc or any other personal reason. i dont see the problem with that.

i dont see the problem even if one didnt do any probono work and did work fulltime in private practise earning 1million or 1 billion. NO ONE WOULD PAY THEM THAT MUCH IF THEY WERENT EARNING EVERY PENNY OF IT. i would never be !!!!ed off by people honestly earning their living. they are entitled to charge 10p and hour or 10million an hour in private practise so long as they have explained to the client at the start before client hires them.

what really !!!!es me off is people sitting on their !!!! when they could work but 'voluntarily choose to be unemployed' because they cant be bothered to work or want highly paid jobs when no one in their senses would give them a highly paid job and seek unemployment benefits because they cant be bothered to work for any less than what they dream about
