  • Based on a couple of the comparison sites, I calculated that we could save over £100 per year by switching to npower's online tariff. For whatever reasons, the switchover took months to complete. Just as it has finally been completed and before I have even had a bill from npower, I received a letter from npower notifying me that they were drastically increasing the tariff - wiping out any savings I may have made. Was it worth all the hassle I wonder?

Be warned - the comparison sites may not show up-to-date figures that you will actually pay.

Oh well, at least I can sit and sup the champagne to help me get over it.

  • Hi all

I have posted this posting on the other chat forum, so apologies for anyone who has seen this already!

there is an organisation called Sutherland Tables (https://www.sutherlandtables.co.uk) which produces comparison of domestic fuel costs, bi-annually, for regions in UK & Ireland. So if you have, say a 3-bed semi in the Midlands you can determine which fuel is the best for you to use, either gas, oil, solid fuel etc, and will tell you the best provider of said fuel, if you have a choice

You have to pay a subscription if you want the information, but most local authorities, government bodies or energy advice centres should hold subscriptions and be able to tell you the most cost effective fuel for you, for free.
  • Hi

I am confused now as I read the letter sent yesterday and was about to swap. I am with British Gas for both Gas and Electric and I am not sure if I should look at swapping or not. Please help.
    Regards

  • hi,
although the recommendation at the moment is "wait, don't switch" when you do come to switch be aware of our experience. we switched through energyhelpline.com because they promised £12.50 cash back. when we switched they said the money would be credited to our account in approx 6-8 weeks. 12 weeks later nothing until we chased it up...were they trying to get out of it thinking we would forget and not bother? you decide. if they were, they nearly got away with it because i only just remembered.

Keep it on or turn it off ?
Does anybody know if it is more cost effective to keep the gas boiler on 24 / 7 during the winter months and control the temperature by the room thermostat or is it best having the boiler coming on twice a day from cold. ie. First thing in the morning, say for 4 hrs, and then in the evening for 6 hrs.
    Any ideas ?

I always set the boiler to come on for an hour in the morning and the same at night. In this weather the water keeps reasonably hot anyway.
