Iphones are awesome... here in the US they are going everywhere although there's only one carrier for them and that is ATT. More businesses are starting to switch to them instead of the traditional Blackberry. I'm not sure what the big problem is with Orange and 02 over there... sounds like you may have more competition when it comes to the iPhone than we do though. We are looking at $80 a month for an iPhone plan.0

They'll sell every one they get, even if the match O2 for price, as some people will just have a network preference.
Orange have said they will not start a price war.0 -
It looks increasingly likely that the only Iphone which will be discounted will be the 3G, however as more are released clearly the prices have to come down even if it is slightly;).0

It's probably more tarriff competition than handset discounts most people will be interested in.0

Sorry if I've overlooked something that has already been discussed, but why doesn't Martin's article consider the PAYG options?

If, like me, you're a light user of calls and texts and mostly want it for data, it appears to be significantly cheaper. e.g. To use a 8GB 3G for 18 months, you'd pay 342.50 for the handset with 12 months' unlimited data, then £10/month for the remaining 6 months. I make that an average of £22.36 per month, excluding call costs. If you make less than £12/month of calls/texts, that sounds like a better option than any of the contracts.
Once again - apologies if I've overlooked something.

- I guess the main issue here is whether people can afford the high initial outlay? I have to say I was in the same position as you Simon and that's exactly what I did. The only thing I regret is being almost at the end of my year's free data!

Buy a new iPhone sim of ebay.
Port your present number to another network PAYG sim and then port it back to your new iPhone sim. And another year free (well cost of sim card and £10 top up)0 -

I must admit I was sceptical about this, I guess I couldn't understand why these iphone sims would end up on ebay with nearly a year's credit left on them - but my o/h bought one and sure enough works perfectly; has another year free. He's not even bothered about porting his number out and back. Maybe I should be more brave!
