The O2 iPhone contract began in June 2007, so to say that a 2 year contract is up in october is a blatant lie (I mean, how can a contract that is 30 month old be for 2 year?). The truth of the matter is, is that Vodafone and Orange have been telling customers for years that the iPhone would soon be available, without anything so much as a clue as to when the o2 exclusivity deal is actually up. The details of the o2/iPhone contract has never been made public, so for some nobody on the end of a vodafone call centre phone to claim to know more than the hundreds and thousands of Apple analysts out there is sheer rubbish.

Tbh I wouldnt hold out any hope of the o2/iPhone monopoly changing any time soon, at least not until a reasonable amount of contractual time is up (3 years sounds more believable than 2 and a half years for any exclusivity deal). That would take things up to next June for possibilities opening up.

Actually, O2 didn't start selling the iPhone until November 2007. The original contract involved revenue sharing with Apple. The was revised for the launch of the iPhone 3G, which allowed Apple to charge more for the handsets and for O2 to subsidise them. Apple and O2 have only ever stated that it is a multi-year agreement (which could mean just more than one year) and there is no confirmation that a longer period would be exclusive (only that O2 will be able to sell the device).

It is very possible that the exclusive contract with O2 will end shortly so I wouldn't dismiss this as rubbish. Most in the industry believe this will happen and signs in the US appear to indicate the same. It's not a matter of if but when.
  • Just noticed that O2 have reduced their offering on at least one tariff - last week, when the iPhone was unavailable, they were offering 600 texts on the £45 tariff. This week, now that the iPhones are in stock again, it's gone down to 500 texts. What a bunch of crooks!

Are you sure? I think it has always been 500 texts (since the last revamp over 18 months ago).
  • The misses has now decided she wants an iphone so we did the rounds for discount but none but we are a little bit confused

02 shop salesman said she can by payg £440 and a tenner top up and it is free web/wifi for a year as she only puts £15 in every 2-3 months as she is a very light user

CPW salesman said you would have to top up a tenner everymonth on payg or you will loose the web /wifi access (think it was just a ruse to get us to buy contracts

so can the misses get a iphone and onmly put a tenner in every few weeks and still get the years free web/wifi

I am certainly interested in the Simplicity/iphone combo.

£440 for the 16gb iphone from apple
    £17.60 minus the 4% Quidco
£4.40 minus 1% egg money cashback (3% with AMEX)
    £418 Total for iPhone

    £19.58 Simplicity 12mth 800 mins + 1600 Text + Unlimited Web Bolt on

    £19.58 x 3 mths (VAT @ 15%)
    £20 x 9 mths (VAT @ 17.5%) increases on the 1st Jan 2010

    £238.74 Total for 12mths
    £100 minus Topcashback
    £138.74 Total for Simplicity

    £556.74 Grand Total for 12mths = £46.40 per month

Plus you get a O2 Money Card with £10 pre-loaded. This deal expires 30 Sept.

This means I can upgrade to a new iPhone when it comes out next year as opposed to in 18 mths!

What sim are u going to use after the 12 months deals?
  • Going to go this route in a week to get the cashback, I will pick the unlimited internet. As a matter of interest, on the simplicity bolt on, what's unlimited wi-fi?

Also after 12 months I presume you can use the PAYG sim that came with the Iphone?

I'm doing the same as this. . .although TCB are only offering 3% for Apple Store. I went with CBK @ 2% and I'll use their Highest Cashback Promise to get the 4% Quidco offer. Do the next step later once I've got confirmed ship on the iphone.

@atlantis - AFAIAC depends what SIM deals (or anything else for that matter) are on the table in 12mths.
