Ah, but I can't afford an outlay of £440 for a 3GS, or £342.50 for a 3G, or in fact of any kind. I guess I need an option when I can spread the cost of the phone by adding to my tariff...
Fair enough :D think the cheapest you will find is £35 a month and £180 ish for a 3G

I mainly got the iphone to listen to podcasts/music, watch the odd video, but most importanly, use it to browse the web and of course use it as a phone.

That's very similar to what I want. I discovered the joys of audio books, iPlayer radio and podcasts on my Nokia N73 which has an app for them.

I'd like the web access because now with Google Docs and gMail I can keep a lot of stuff online. Notes, reminders, to-do lists and the like. Also, when I travel it's nice to have access to Google Maps and Wikitravel. When shopping it's handy to be able to check online specs and prices too.

Actually, there is an app for Google Android which lets you photograph a bar code and then look it up online, searching for details and the best price. There is probably something similar for the iPhone.
Of course, it has its annoyances, like the rather limited bluetooth (you can't transfer files to and from another bluetooth device as far as I'm aware), but what it does do, it does really really well.
There is a way to do that if it's jailbroken, as well as to access it as a normal USB flash drive to avoid needing iTunes.
As I said, I mainly got it for web browsing. This it does really really well. Apart from no flash (which can get annoying at times) the Safari browser is excellent and caters for my browsing needs fine when I'm out and about.
It's just a shame the telcos can't get together and sort out international data charges. A lot of them are owned by the same parent company or have reciprocal agreements for voice anyway. Being able to browse anywhere when abroad would be very, very useful to me.

As it is, I'll probably just use my current PAYG sim because I have wifi at work, at home, at Starbucks and at the pub which accounts for 90% of my life ;)

Still not sure if I will get an iPhone, iPod Touch or another phone. Found this amusing though:

Has anyone got Visual Voicemail to work on the Simplicity tariff? It's meant to only work on iPhone pay monthly tariffs but just wondered.

Yes, there are thousands of apps for Symbian (the OS that the N73 runs).

Strange, it seems okay to me, on a par with the iPhone 3G (don't know about the 3GS). I don't browse with it, just use it as a phone, audio book player and basic camera.
