My iphone 4's arrived at the Apple Retail Store. I was only notified after they'd closed today and the collection date is for tomorrow only! Not impressed really as it's not exactly local and means a Monday evening trip after work.

    - not great i agree but id grab it though imo
ive reserved one myself but have to wait 2/3 wks Apple said :(

My PAC from T-Mobile has just expired so I'll have to get another one, presumably this won't cause a problem and they'll do it straight away.

    - id check with them but if youre at end of the contract then maybe you could do a 30 day sim thing if they refuse then get ur PAC , not sure if thats a way round it

As I originally planned to go with Tesco Mobile and gave up when the phones weren't available, I now have to decide which network to go with.

    - im in same boat and was told my by the tmob they will have iphone4 before i can upgrade which is 4.8.10 , im going to try get best deal with them

Can anyone advise? Is there a problem with cutting down SIMS if I don't chose O2?

    - sure soon u can get microsims or u do DIY - might have same problem but apparently it is easy i hear

Also am I stupid to be going ahead with this bearing in mind the possible reception problems? I've never had good reception with any networks in my home.

think its been blown up out of proportion about the recp problem -imo

    hope this helps!

Nothing to do with the phone all to do with the contract.

However all networks are now limiting the amount of data you can download per month, if you plan on streaming data and using Skype then you should read the contract carefully, go over the monthly limit and you'll be charged for extra data useage.

For the most part any smartphone will do all you wish apart from the two above.

If you want iTunes connectivity you really need an iPhone, if you want MS Office you need a Windows Mobile phone, they are pretty much exclusive to each platform.

There are apps that will let you do a similar job but not really the same as the orignal software. Some non apple phones can integrate into Itunes, but as you have an Apple Laptop and you probably have a decent sized itunes library then the iPhone is probably the best bet. The Palm Pre could use iTunes but Apple changed iTunes so it would not work with the Pre, even money says that they'll do it again if any other vendor does the same for a new phone.

That said you really need to go into a store and play with the phones, there is no substitute for that, what looks good on paper may just not feel right to you.

    I have a Windows Phone.

The mobile version of Excel is useless for what I need, as it cannot cope with complicated macros and VBA. In addition, trying to view a large spreadsheet on a phone is never going to work.

The version of Word is also cut down to real basics and may as well just be a text editor with .doc readability. If you are looking to get something that you can type on as well as carry about, get an iPad.

In the 18 months I've had my phone and the 6 years prior to that when I used an HP iPaq, I never once needed to use the Powerpoint programme.

So my suggestion to you would be to forget requirement number 9; it sounds like a nice idea but in reality, the experience sucks.

I’ve got my phone from the store but can’t do much with it without a SIM. They couldn’t set it up for me as I didn’t take out a contract.

I phoned T-Mobile to get my PAC and they said to wait till Friday when the micro-SIMs would be available. I can then transfer my number onto it without paying a cancellation charge. However I’m not really convinced as I checked in the T-Mobile store and they hadn’t had any notification of them being available in the near future.

Not sure whether to wait or just go for the 3 micro-SIM and port my number and leave T-Mobile. Is there any official info on when these SIMs will be released?

Cashback seems to be based on the type of contract. Buying a 3GS with Vodafone through Quidco will net you £90. For some reason, Topcashback don't have any iPhone cashback offers with Vodafone.

I am thinking of getting the 18 month contract for £35 p/month. Quidco will still give me £90 if I undertstood u correctly

I decided to take the plunge and got a Sim free Iphone 4 from the Apple store last weekend. Wanted one for the internet, 5MP camera and iPod all on one device.

i don't call or text that much so currently have on Virgin PAYG (Simply 8p tariff). I just cut my existing Virgin SIM card down to micro sim size (applied for a free 3 PAYG micro-SIM to use as a template).

Everything works fine. I think I'll prob add the Virgin Mobile 'Internet Data add on - which is £5 a month for 1GB of data. Currently its costing 30p per day - but that only covers 25MB fair usage so might be a bit tight with an Iphone.

So SIM free the phone was £599 (I went for the 32GB), and £60 a year for data charges). With the Simply 8p tariff I get 50 mins calls per month to other Virgin mobiles, texts and everything else is 8p.

For the low-talker/texter I thought this was a good option.
