Im having the same problem
ETA Just read through this thread and tried the 0845 300 3600. Got through after about 30 seconds, very helpful man on the end and forms in the post. Thankyou for your help folksI don't know if I'm getting better or just used to the pain.

Got through straight away with the 3600 number but was told by the guy that answered the phone that it was a priority number for those overseas. He dealt with my claim but said he would have to put a 'note' on my account saying I'd used the wrong number ????0

Hi we have been trying for about 2 weeks to get through but have had no success. even rung up bang on 8 am. has anyone found an alternative number to contact them?0

Got this landline number......0191 206 1385
I have eventually gotten through although it has taken between 10 and 15 minutes average to actually speak to a living person0 -
0845 300 3600
Tis the number for oversees callers but is being answered a lot quicker than the other number.
You may get a slight telling off though, but don't worry about it.Be happy, it's the greatest wealth0 -

I asked her if there was somebody that I could complain to as I've spent £££ on trying to get through & she gave me this address (not a phone line :j)

I don't usually complain but it has become sooo frustrating during the last 6 months that I will. I've tried calling at all different times of day & have sometimes tried 60+ times before getting through. Although if they are going to be cutting jobs I guess it will only get worse...
Just tried this number. Got through straight away but then got a ticking off for ringing it as it was for overseas calls only and to not ring it again. The lady took my details but wasn't very friendly I'm afraid. Probably disturbed her sleep....0 -
Its not a "special overseas helpline" your going through to when you call the overseas number, just the normal helpline - you just skip the queue! I think it may get worse before it gets better with staff cuts etc.0

I've just phoned the 0191 206 1381 number and after a 5 min wait spoke to a really helpfull fella called John who has hopefully sorted things out for me. I too had been trying for over 3 weeks at various times of the day and weekend to get through on the 0845 300 3600 number only to be cut off after going through the various buttons to press. I asked why I had been able to get through on the 0191 number and John said that it is a direct number that jumps the queue and that it will be stopped in the near future.0

Hi
Just got my bill for ringing the Tax Credit helpline towards the end of July. I tried calling at total of 343 times , YES 343 times (surprised myself!) This cost me £55 as each connection attempt costs 16p
Each call lasted 5 to 9 seconds. I recall for the whole morning, i just sat there like a zombie watching TV and pressing the redial button till i finnaly got through. Although I made about 100 of the calls over two days prior.
I left it extremely late to renew the credits as the dead line was approaching soI know they would be busy.
Do you think its fair for them to charge for these connections. I can only imagine the Tax office has made tens of thousands of pounds from people getting the dreaded "Sorry, we're busy right now".
How about a quing system instead of me having to redial!!
Has anyone else noticed a spike in their phone bill trying to get through? And do you think its worth complaining about and trying to get some money back off them?
I have an article link here about the complaints regarding how bad their system was to get through to. I cant post the link as these site will not let me post links
Thanks

Its an 0845 number, how does it cost 16p? HMRC make no money from the 0845 line and it costs money to operate one.0
