After being flamed on here for repeating the prices EDF quoted me on Friday I called them back today at 5pm and was given these prices:

    Elec Band A - 17.50p
    Elec Band B - 10.36p

    Gas Band A - 7.000p
    Gas Band B - 3.056p

Not convinced by these prices as they are almost double my old prices I called them back again and was given the same prices as Friday:

    Elec Band A - 10.48p
    Elec Band B - 7.45p

    Gas Band A - 5.571p
    Gas Band B - 3.056p

They also confirmed the Band A for Gas was now reduced to 2,680kwh per annum from 5,860kwh previously.

This makes a huge difference and I am now going to call British Gas to cancel my transfer.

Divide the new price by the old price and ignore the 1 at the start of the answer
    Band A (6.224/3.620 = 1.72) 72% increase
    Band B (8.31/6.39 = 1.30) 30% increase

ok well thats a huge increase,,what i dont understand why is it 72% and 30%

i thought it was 17% and 22% these are way above.

The increases they quote are the increase you will see annually to your bill.

For example my gas prices have increased by 63.6% (band A) and 29.5% (band B) but over the year I will only see an increase of 24%.

When EDF announced their price increases I changed my supplier the same day. I also sent a letter to EDF stating that under their terms and conditions they were not able to change my pricing during the change over period. Yesterday I received my gas bill with the price increases included. Can they do this? Advice please.

If it's in their T&C then no. Phone them up and ask for your bill to be recalculated.

This is similar to your question.

It is unclear IMO exactly what the regulations are when you apply to move before you get formal notification of a price increase; although clearly it makes sense that you should be covered.

has anyone on online v5 had a bill yet confirming the new prices.i have heard nothing from them since they told me over the phone mine is not going up yet.my elec bill is due on the 20th so will see then.
  • After waiting 3 days for an answer to my email about the online v5 tariff here is the reply

    Thank you for your e-mail.

Having reviewed your account I can confirm that the Online Version 5 tariff has been affected by the price increase. The new increased price tariffs are given below.

    Electricity

Band A (First 225 kWh per quarter) 10.48p per kWh
Band B (All remaining kWh per quarter) 7.45p per kWh

    Gas

Band A (First 670 kWh per quarter) 5.571p per kWh
Band B (All remaining kWh per quarter) 3.056p per kWh

Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us if there is anything else you would like to discuss.

    Kind regards

I then started to swap supplier immediately, this happened at the end of last month and I have had no letter in the post about these rises (and nore has anyone else by the sound of it) so I suggest people get onto EDF themselves to find exactly what there positions are or there will be some nasty shocks to come.

Out of interest, their terms and conditions state
We will be allowed under this contract to change any of these terms (including the price we charge you or the structure of your tariff we charge you) at any time. If this change is to your significant disadvantage (such as a price increase), we will notify you in accordance with the requirements of our supply licence ("Variation Notice"). If you do not wish to accept this change to your terms, you must advise us in writing within 14 days from the date on which we told you of the change.

From what I am hearing, EDF have not been writing to people and letting them know of their price increases.

If EDF fail in this obligation, then arguably you can wait until your next bill (and even then only if it's very clear there's been an increase) - at which point you can switch suppliers and ask them to recalculate on the old price.

It's a slightly risky strategy because EDF could claim that the price rises are so widely reported you couldn't fail to notice, but I don't think they'd win that argument. This term very clearly talks about a 'Variation Notice'.
