Books-wise. I love them too. My fave author is Marian Keyes.
I totally recommend the Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger and We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver. Both books that had me thinking for hours afterwards.
Hey - I love Marian Keyes too - she is the best chick-lit author around and so so funny. Have you read 'Is Anyone Out There'?? Really good, a bit sad but really funny as well.
I have also read The Time Travellers Wife and love it. I think if you like that - you might like The Improbable Future - can't remember who it is by though!
I haven't read We Need To Talk About Kevin but have heard a lot of rec's for it so must look for it.
Sarah- I know what you mean about the biographies digging the dirt and Agatha Christies doesn't cover her disappearance - she conveniently avoids this. However I just found the whole thing really interesting, she went to live in Eqypt as a teenager because it was 'cheaper'?!!!
I just always wonder how truthful the biographies can be? I started reading one about Wallis Simpson but couldn't get into it as was written from a really misogynistic point of view!I've got my own flat :j:j

Hey Bowski
I live in Peckham, South East London. I'm imagining you typing from a village with amazing views of lakes and mountains. I was in the lake-district really briefly in Sept - my friend did the 3 Peaks challenge and her team needed someone to drive the mini-bus and I volunteered. So much fun! and the Lake District was gorgeous, spent the whole day in a field near Scafell Pike though so didn't see that much!!I've got my own flat :j:j

Me at 25
Rubbish job
Negative outlook - on everything
Drink problem
Too many toxic friends
Overbearing, negative mother (think Peggy Mitchell meets Pauline Fowler!)
Then I read Being Happy. I read it, re-read it, then re-read it for months. Within 12 months, I'd:
Passed my driving test
Bought a car
Moved down south
Got the first of many great jobs
Met the first of many great friends
Cut the vile mother out of my life
Me at 37
Flatshare in lovely area with lovely Italian fella
Brilliant job that I LOVE
Positive, expect-the-best outlook
Will be debt-free in a few months
Alcohol free for over 8 years
Lots of lovely, supportive and fabulous friends
No contact with vile mother (that was and still is an outstandingly positive change to my life)
How much of this do I attribute to Being Happy? Pretty much all of it! (and no, I'm not on commission!!)
Sorry for the long post guys! Just as well I've nearly finished my lunch break, eh!
Catch up with you later
I have lots of self help books along the same lines but your pitch has sold it to me and it's on it's way.I have been very sensible all week and hardly bought anything and had 4NSDs so far, so am justifying the expense.
It does sound like my sort of book though and it's not breaking the bank. I shall read and report back. However, if I am not living with a lovely Italian man within 12 months I shall be contacting you for financial recompense.

:rotfl: I can't attribute my lovely flatmate to reading the book, but I just wanted to remind you all that I live with an ITALIAN FORMER PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLER!! :rotfl:
I do hope you get something out of the book. It takes more than one read through (which you could do in an afternoon, tbh), but once read it's really useful for a quick 10 minute refresh/recharge of the positive thoughts bit of your brain.
I might dig mine out for a re-read this weekend
Ooh, slightly off-topic... I IM'd the Dirty Texter today! We were both dead busy though so we could only chat for a couple of mins, but it was cool, you know, chatty, pally, nothing saucyI needed to speak with him about a work thing and made a little joke that I was going to suggest we catch up over coffee, but that he'd probably find a last minute reason to cancel!! He took it in the good humour with which it was intended, so we're back on an even keel. I'm glad we chatted today rather than let it go on for weeks though.
Anyway, he was dead helpful and emailed through some stuff to help me out, and we've arranged to catch up on Monday - to talk about the work thing. Nothing else!£27k (excluding interest) paid off in 29 months
Finally debt free!0 -

Ah yes, Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger and We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver! Brilliant books - thanks for reminding me RMR. I was gutted when I finished the Time Traveller's Wife - I missed the characters immediately. Read it again a few months later and it was still brilliant (in fact possibly even better as I'd got my head round the whole time travelling thing!). I think I heard they were going to make it into a film
Will need to check it out.
Yes they are making Time Travellers Wife as a film. I don't want to watch it though as PS I Love You was such a disappointment to me. Loved the book and HATED the film. I must read TTW again.
Also, i was thinking about other books I love and Bill Bryson is another recommendation of mine. He writes travel books but they are really funny and genuinely heartfelt at times.
here's another book recommendation: Being Happy by Andrew Matthews.
I really really want this book now. But I don't get paid for another week and a half so can't afford it till then. Normally I'd have used my CC to buy anything I want but can't afford, so this is a little breakthrough for me to wait until I have actual money :j
Still really want the book now though...

Does ITV1 have something like i-player? That has totally saved me when I've forgotten to tape something? TBH haven't seen it repeated anywhere else unfortunately!
Glad no nasty letters hit your mat today!
Good luck with the diet - I'm on day 5 and managing ok so far!!!
RMR - I know what you mean about PS I Love You - they made way too many changes. And I hate that fake cheesy Ireland that they always show inthe films. My mum got a bookmark for me last christmas that said 'Don't judge a book by it's film!'
Now am most intrigued about 'Being Happy' - I might see about getting it. I have 'Feel The Fear' somewhere and I found that to be a really useful book. Really made me think about my motives for not doing something.
I would love to be really graceful. I'm the sort of person that knocks into everything, gets my jumper stuck when taking it off, drops my bag on the floor upside down, leaves things on buses, undone shoelaces so I trip over, get caught in ticket barriers....that kind of thing... when in my head I am super-polished and glamorous and very graceful & elegant
ps I am always late - however have improved in recent years!I've got my own flat :j:j

tried there but they are only showing very small clips not the full episodes and i found an article where freemantle apparently dont let itv catchup show the episodes which is a pain in the neck for me
they soon will as issued default notice before christmas so im just waiting for debt collectors to write:mad: sometimes my debt panics me..... EVEN after 4 years or so.

I cried buckets at that film. Hit a bit too close to home for me - well, not that Gerard Butler ever danced around my house in his pants then died leaving me creepy letters lying around - more the part in the film where Kathy Bates turns to her daughter and asks how she's felt on her own all the time after her dad left.
My Dad left when I was 2 so I didn't get to know him until much later on in life. My Mum has been on her own since and I'm often to wrapped up in my own life to sometimes think, "God, she's been on her own all that time and not once have I ever though about her like that".
The rest of the film was cack though!Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!0 -
Hi everybody :hello:
Just been catching up with all the posts. I, too am a reader, mostly chick lit - and for some reason I like the Irish ones! Sheelagh O'Flannagan, Marian Keyes. I have recently been reading Melissa Hill, she's really good -and always a twist at the end
Had a mixed week really, managed to lose 3lbs but have started slipping again towards the end of the week - and just had pizza as a Friday treat
