    Hi Sarah,

know just what you mean about good old fashioned sweeties * feels relieved at finding fellow nostalgic*

Oh thank goodness, I am not alone! I remember going to the shop for 2oz of Rosebuds/sherbert lemons/aniseed twist and some penny chews with the change, running home to pinch some bread and cheese and crisps from the cupboard and then spending hours in my room finding out the lastest antics of The Famous Five/Secret Seven/Mallory Towers before heading downstairs to see if my sister's letter would be read out on Jim'll Fix It (took me years to realise it was filmed months in advance.)

 I have goosebumps - sherbet lemons, famous five, secret seven, mallory towers, those were the days *goes misty with memories*.

Times have changed ; DD reads a lot of Jacqueline Wilson & the characters have a really hard time, it saddens me as there's no escapism like we had. I actually agreed to go to boarding school because I truly believed that it would be like mallory towers. Hmmmm ok, there were girls called Bunty & Belinda but trust me that's where the similarities end  .

Yes, the chalet school girls, I actually still have a few of my old books lying around somewhere, including the entire little house on the prairie set ;)

Oh! Loved St Clare's! Could never get into the chalet girls, didn't have my mum's childhood copies and the library only had a couple of them. Also loved The Circus of Adventure series/The Five Find Outers/The castle/mountain, etc...of Adventure/anything really. Was very lucky to grow up in a house with lots of books. Have told my mum that when I have children all those books are to be transfered to me.

One of the things I would love about having children is the opportunity to introduce them to my childhood reading (and sweets). I have all the books at my parents' house, ready to be passed to me. I worry that I am terribly old fashioned, have already lost the sweets argument (no oz anymore) but want to win the books one. The thing is, in terms of society those books are old fashioned, but in terms of morality/enjoyment they are not and never will be. But I can't see them overcoming the thrall of the Wii etc. I do think *shows age* that today's children have missed out. *Plans to keep children in time warp*

I remember mintolas! I wish they would bring back Fry's 5 Centres! And shops where you could get 2oz of boiled sweets in a bag from big jars on the shelf. *feels old*

I was just talking about Fry's 5 Centres! Can get the white, green and orange ones, but not the mixture.

I remember pink being next to the green - I've no idea what the 5th one was though!
  • I wanted to go to the Chalet school thought it was amazing and that I'd learn German much better there.

I remember the Fiver finders outers. I had a fantastic childhood. I couldn't put books down. would read all the time.

*feels it neccesary to confess that I have been looking at gardening books on amazon - a new sadness! have mentally spent 20 quid. not going to buy anything yet tho.
and all this is because of my sister! must not spend money have no money to spend*

    good night all xxxx
