    Sarah,

sorry to hear  news, I know exactly how you feel - I cant really offer much help other than to suggest that a glass of wine might help take the edge off  .

Dont give up however frustrated you feel; I had a few weeks when it felt like the whole world was stacked against me & the harder I tried to clear debts, the more unexpected things I had to pay out for :(

Perhaps 2 glasses of wine & maybe another vanilla slice.

It's the feeling of being utterly powerless that sucks the most

Thanks Lula, you're right about the powerlessness, quite frankly they could charge me anything they like as I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT:confused:  . So will have the cost of the car and the loss of 2 days pay and 2 taxi trips for starters. They really should teach this sort of thing in school, it's really important:mad: At least as I am stranded I can't hit the (proper) shops.

Right. Plan of action. Tescos. Wine. Chocolates. Scratchcard- my cunning plan to pay for car. Maybe peruse the cake section. And the sweets. And the Pringles. Come home. Scoff lot.

Will be back later for some drunken ramblings.

They were very cagey about the additional costs
Will have to take another day off work:mad:
For God's sake I am trying so hard here, trying to stop silly spending, did the get it done challenge thread yesterday and got absolutely loads done and was feeling so positive, then I have to miss 2 day's pay and pay a huge car bill:mad:
    Have only just cleared cc:mad:
    What's the bloody point?
One step forward and 2 steps back:mad:
    Am bloody sick of this:mad:

    Hi Sarah,

You can always ask to keep the parts that were replaced. Any reputable garage won't have a problem with that & if they aren't so reputable & start making excuses for not giving you them, then I'd be straight on to trading standards as that usually means they've done unnecessary work.

One of the favourites for the chancers is to claim that the price you have been quoted includes part-exchange on the old parts. Especially electrical items such a starter motors & alternators which can be reconditioned fairly cheaply.

Hi SBC, I presume they are a reputable garage as I went to a main dealer after a horrible experience in the summer with a local garage which practically kept my car hostage and kept doing more things to it without my permission. I also assumed- not sure if I am right- that as they are a main dealership they are less likely to skim any money off the top as they won't see any cash and it is a large business not a small one man garage. I have been there before and they were very good then so I have my fingers crossed.

Have calmed down a little bit now, couldn't actually find much I wanted! Have wine and some mini Cadbury's things for post 9pm, I don't like drinking before 9, mostly because I run out of wine too quickly:D .

I have a nice cup of tea for now and found a lovely candle I'd forgotten about when I was tidying earlier, so now have a lovely smelling tidy room. If they get my car ready very early tomorrow, and they said they would try, I can start work later and finish later, so will actually only lose 1 day's pay. And if they don't I will do more tidying and filing and take books to charity shop so at least I feel productive. *tries to be positive*

  • Hi,

I started my new job 2 weeks ago. My car broke down twice, needed 3 new tyres at a total of £210 and then the same night managed to smash a £150 glass tv stand. I wailed. Now I'm having problems paying my bills this month.

    It's always guaranteed

There are main dealerships that rip people off just as there are top notch independent garages. The only real difference is that they have bought a franchise, have manufacturers branding & charge 3 times as much

The only time I KNOW I was ripped off it was a big franchised garage, I like wee local ones as they usually try harder to build a relationship and not rip you off. Personal recommendation counts for a lot I think but I'm sure there are lots of dishonest wee garages and honest big ones too. BTW I've also been to the place they do tyres and exhausts and they've never tried to sell me anything I haven't gone in for. Which must mean I look like a poor, skint girlie and not a rich, gullible one!
