  • Good news on the car front then?! I went out to mine this morning (first day back after two days off with 'The Exorcist' virus) and my back tyre was flat! Pah. Locking wheel cap thingys and I can't find the thing for opening them so was rummaging about for pliars trying to get to work. Still, got into work and people were having a bit of a giggle about me being a bit ill on the floor the other day (thankfully they saw the funny side). I always hate phoning in sick, but I think I pushed it trying to go in on Monday when I clearly wasn't well. Used to work with someone who would build up to a Friday off (Monday, "I've got a funny sensation", Tuesday, "I think I've got a headache brewing", Wednesday, "I've got a thumping headache", Thursday, "It's getting worse", Friday, "I won't be in" which we worked out happened 34 fridays in the year - what's worse is she was spotted in a pub one Friday night! Anyhow, I rant!).

When I'm debt-free I hope to get a new car. Nothing great or grand - I've kind of accepted that having a nice car is not really one of life's essentials, but that being able to afford what you have is. Of course, if it happens to be a man magnet then so much the better!
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!
  • Hi,

Sorry to crash in again - do you think that people ever move back in with their folks for a while to get straight? Feeling a bit down about it at the mo.

Didn't want to start a new thread. Feeling a bit down about it.

    Glad about Sarah's purchases :D:o
  • Hi PinkTwirl, I think quite a few people do that, I take it your parents live nearby? I think there are pros and cons to moving back, I don't think I could do it, they would drive me mad!

I know you don't really want to start a new thread but it might be a good idea as it will catch the eye of everyone browsing the board. That way you are bound to get more responses, and hopefully some of them will be people who have moved back in with their parents, so they can give you a better idea of how it will be.

Chin up, we all get a bit down sometimes and it seems like you've had a bit of a rubbish time lately, hope you're ok xxx

    Thanks Sarah,

No, I've moved 500 miles from my flat, but I needed to move anyway, I was really down and for various reasons wanted to move away from there. £20K of debt is going to really kick me in the teeth for renting anywhere.

Just missing my things being out and my freedom. Why did I do this to myself!

I read your posts about your previous job, a similar thing happened to me a few years ago, so I really sympathise with you. It must be a huge weight off your mind to finally be out of it though. I know when it was happening to me I was really weepy all the time and became incredibly clingy, do you think part of the reason you want to move back is a comfort thing, i.e. you feel "safer" at your parents house? How well do you get on with them? Could you stand the loss of freedom?

Maybe do a few sums. How quickly would the £20k be cleared if you moved back? If it would be a great help then maybe it is a good idea. If it wouldn't make much difference then think about what else you might gain/lose from moving in. Is this all for financial reasons? If you are having a rubbish time and you feel you might benefit in more ways than financial e.g. having some company, it might be a good short term move.

What do your instincts tell you to do? I always rely on mine, after years of doing what I thought I should do. My instincts told me I would still manage if I left my crappy job and I have never looked back.

  • Hi, :o

I wanted to move back because I had absolutely no social life where I was. I was really lonely and wanted to move back to where I at least had a few people. Also, I was/am drowning in debt because the only fun I was having outside work was buying myself something nice.

I'm not really happy about being back where I started, but it's better than being alone and skint all the time, living on my own was very expensive. The place was nice but that's really all there was once me and my ex split up. I tried but friends were very transient or sponged off me.

My sensible-head is saying pay £1000 off a month until it's done and save for a car, then get into a rented flat, keep the flat in the South of England, and never use another credit card again, it would take about 18 months - 2 years I think to be truly clear and have about £6K in the bank as my car is a P reg and will need replaced at some point.

My mind is saying "god you're 31, why the hell are you staying with your parents? You big child!!!" It's really embarrassing telling people :embarasse
  • I think your situation is a bit complicated as I'm not sure if you are selling your flat and moving in with your parents, or keeping your flat and moving back later. Anyway, I am not the best person to advise you as I have never owned a house. As to the being 31 at your parents, I think plenty of 30somethings do it! Nothing to be embarrassed about there!

I do think you should start a thread as you will get lots of brilliant advice, but if you're not feeling up to it leave it for a couple of days. Hopefully some of the people who post on this thread will see your post tomorrow and have some more useful advise for you.

I have joined a thread called "pay off 20k by Xmas 2009," maybe you could have a look at that? It would be fabulous if you could get it done in a year, or a least make a big dent in it.

Don't get too bogged down with what others think. That's part of the reason I'm in debt. I wanted everyone to see that I was doing well for myself - on my own, yes - but hey, I'd have the biggest telly, the best car, the nicest suits, the best gadgets...................ended up with the biggest debt!! Came down to a decision as to whether I wanted to live my life for me or them.

Now my gadgets are all dated and crap, my suits no longer fit, my big telly (a 32" CRT) looks positively archaic, my car is 8 years old and I can barely afford the MOT..............................:rotfl:

  • Hi Sarah,

Thanks for the reply. I'm hanging onto my flat as I don't think I would get what I need to in order to get another one.

    I've already joined the £20K thread :D

    Thanks :o

Thanks :o True, caring what others think is part of the reason there are so many people in debt I suppose.

Nothing material lasts forever I suppose. still, I'm sitting watching my LCD 32" tv which I'm still paying for so at least there is something accountable for a bit of my debt! The same one is on sale on ebay now for about £100 :rotfl: I paid £1K
