  • Errrm... Lets just ignore that bit :D. I suppose the first questions I should have asked are is it a petrol or diesel. Also what type of car is it? Please don't answer that with a colour....

    Petrol Ford Ka X reg

Does it misfire at all? It would sound/feel like the engine has coughed. Or is it more like the engine is just ignoring you wanting to accelerate?

Don't know about the sound, just gets louder, feels like a cough, it starts jumping around but still goes, I try to accelerate but it won't have it, takes a while, but does eventually get back up to speed. Does it maybe 3-4 times in a half hour journey.

I still need to know a bit more but between the loss of engine power & the screeching noise it's beginning to sound like a worn or poorly tensioned drive belt or timing belt so you might be in luck, might just need to get it re-tensioned or at most a new belt fitted.

    :j :j :j :j :j

How simple & cheap that is depends on the car. I've had cars where I could get a new belt for a few quid & do the job myself in 10 minutes with just a basic socket set.

    No. :D

On the other hand my current car took me & my mechanic brother 2 hours to change it & we had to get it up on a lift & take out the front wheel arch to be able to get at all the pulleys it had to loop over.

Thanks for this, as I have said I do the helpless female act, but it's not really an act, and I do worry that it will be something simple and I will be scammed by a garage like last time. If I know what it is I can act like I'm knowledgable. Someone has suggested carburettor (sp)?

Could be a faulty carb I suppose, it would explain periods of low power & misfires as would a leak in the throttle body or exhaust manifold, but those wouldn't explain the screeching which is almost certainly a slipping belt. (could just be the fanbelt though)

Off the top of my head other things that can cause power loss are

    Faulty fuel pump - expensive.
Clogged fuel filter - fairly cheap.
Worn spark plugs - fairly cheap.
Poor cylinder compression (are you losing coolant fluid? if so it might be your head gasket. That would need sorting asap because if the head gasket blows it can warp your engine - write off time.)

Actually I've just had another thought - the brakes sticking on would feel similar to loss of power & possibly a misfire & might also cause a screeching noise. Does the screeching noise happen when you're stationary with the engine running? If so it's not the brakes.

Screeching noise is just when move off driveway or I pull away from junctions. Not the head gasket as had that a few months ago (you are right, very expensive). Am going to keep my fingers crossed for faulty fuel filter or spark plugs if they are the least expensive. Car only has 45,000 on clock so loath to give it up as probably has quite a bit of life left in it. Am going to risk it for work tomorrow as have no holiday entitlement left and take it to garage at weekend. Thanks for your advice SBC, will mention the cheaper things you have said and hopefully look all knowledgable. ;)

I'm still here, mooching around, reading occasionally, nothing fun to add and bored of whining about the same old stuff and most likely boring peoples eyes off when I do it!

Made me laugh about the cars and drowning out loud noises, my car for some bizarre reason has a temp fan that ONLY works on 4, nada for 1, 2 & 3 .. so if I need the fan on to demist its loud as hell .. so I of course turn up the volume of music to a hearable level. I am sure I get looks off kids going aaah bless the poor old deaf woman in her car

Another thought - Engine getting noisier but not having any power could be your clutch slipping (effectively taking it out of gear) & the jumping around a bit could be it dropping back into gear while in high revs.

Fingers crossed it's not that as it could be pretty expensive.

Edit: Oh & thanks for Jinxing me - my car misfired a couple of times on the way in.

    Hi All,
My first car used to make a very light tapping noise and I used to say to everyone who got in the car could they here it? my mum told me it was my imagination first car and all that, when it went for the mot it turned out the engine mounts were collapsing, the rubber seals were all worn, saying that nothing much else wrong with it, Sarah you should find a decent garage, I'm lucky mines at the end of the road this old guy runs it and he's even lent me a new car to get to work.
SBC you should def get some brown shoes, when I'm out I always look at what kind of shoes are been worn, and I will admit I think decent shoes are a must, and clean shaven is a plus as well can't stand sandpaper on my face.
Hope everyones got a good weekend planned, I must pace myself this Saturday I'm not going to show myself up in Mansfield, and I'm not on Facebook either, can't see the attraction with it.
  • You deffo need some brown shoes though fella!! I aint seen a bloke in black shoes for ages... brown is the new black my friend! And I can't talk for all women but most the women I know.. good shoes are essential !! much more than money! (need money though to buy brown shoes tho..eek!)

So to a woman brown shoes are good shoes, even if I don't like them, but black shoes are bad even if they are good quality, smart & I like them?

    I think I prefer wearing what I like & being single ;)

I'm deffo not doing the car though coz it's far too cold. I am freezing but I'm not gonna put the heating on until i've moved around first and see if i'm then still freezing :o

I really need a new washing machine, I don't know if I've mentioned before but the door has fallen off mine but I can still get it on to use it, anyways the plumber was round earlier and he went to pull the washing machine out and pulled the door off, I was so embarassed, he must think I'm a total dosser! Anyways where as before I was thinking..well it still works so dont need a new one yet' now I'm thinking I NEED a new one coz I really don't want that to happen again.

Hi Ossireo, glad you're ok. I always feel I'm whining about the same old stuff but it doesn't stop me posting! You certainly don't bore anyone, we like to hear from you. Just noticed in your sig you've lost nearly a stone:j :j :jWell done you! I am jealous of your determination, any tips for sticking to your diet? I am very annoyed with myself because if I'd stuck to it when we first started that would be my sig too:rolleyes:
